  1. George Beahm says:

At this point, if you haven’t gotten your print yet, I’ll be holding off and shipping them off until after Christmas. (I need to take a bit of a break.) I’ll be shipping these out by FIRST CLASS MAIL between Christmas and the New Year. We have enough stock to give them out worldwide, but after that, the door CLOSES PERMANENTLY on this giveaway. And your only opportunity to buy one will be when you see them popping up on eBay. So if you want one, now is your chance. We want to get this lovely print in the hands of as many FANS as possible. I just got back the final batch from Tim Kirk, who has hand-signed each print. Happy Holidays to Pullman fans worldwide from Tim and myself! We’ve both enjoyed the movie and Pullman’s great three-book series, His Dark Materials, and hope as many of you as possible go back to see the movie over the holidays before it leaves the theaters sometime in January. (Look for the DVD in May, if I’m guessing correctly.)

for some reason, my email was rejected and sent back by mail daemon or whatever that is…

  3. anik says:

jammer, the same thing happened to me.

  4. Abe S. says:

The Vatican has just “officially” banned the Golden Compass.

  5. Phil says:

Yeah, my e-mail was rejected as well. Odd.

  6. John L says:

It’s a shame that the Vatican waited so long to condemn “The Golden Compass”. Had they been persuaded to condemn it a month sooner, New Line could have used the condemnation in its promotional messages to boost the American boxoffice. There are lots of Vatican-haters in America.

  7. Matt says:

FYI Golden compass is finally starting to rack up the big BO due to overseas success:

$61,280,000 from the US and Canada
    plus a wapping
$187,000,000 from the International market making a total of

    $248,280,000

With an estimate that it will eventually take $250,000,000 from the foreign BO alone.

Good figures, but sadly probably not enough to get TSK made as NLC pre-sold the international rights….ooops

    Cheers

  8. drama queen says:

hello, is any one here…………….. it’s like dead, no news nothing, nothing has been changed or anything…………
imdb have like 100 pics of the films by the way…………..

  9. Marco says:

I’m here, but I don’t have any news

  10. Marco says:

Hold up….. 100 pics from the movie!? Were all of them exciting? Some of them might get a little boring because there areonly so many pics to be taken from the movie. As if anybody would look at all of them, but I don’t have anything better to do, so where did you see them?

(I know this isn’t on topic, but could I ask what a mac is?)

  11. Marco says:

    They banned the Golden Compass?

  12. ian says:

I hope btts posts news about the movie sequels. If they aren’t making any, I guess I have The Hobbit to look forward too. 🙁 The bright side is that maybe C. W. might add the moved ending to the hopeful director’s cut if there isn’t any sequels. (I personly felt that the movie was awesome besides the stuuuuuuuuuupid hatcheting job New Line made on Cris’ masterpiece!!!!!)

  13. ian says:

Sorry for the off topic discussion. I wish I could be lucky and win a contest for something.

  14. Amy T. says:

Marco, the pictures they’re talking about are at imdb.com. They’re pretty good, but they are a bit small.

  15. drama queen says:

i haven’t seen all the pics but i think most of them are like the one which we have already seen on here……………..

  16. matt says:

Wow! Compass BO pulls in a huge $364M. That is way, way in excess of its budget. And more that Box Office Prophets estimated its total could possibly be. The vast majority of the take coming from non-us territories. Even though the NLC sold off the foreign territory rights, presumably those that paid up front for the movie to be made will be queuing to finance a sequel. Will they or won’t they green light TSK? It somehow seems in the balance again! Now there’s a story….BTTS go and tap your contacts at NLC, CW’s team, his wife and his dog….

  17. George Beahm says:

LYRA prints: I am currently in the process of shipping out the final batch of Lyra prints for people from December. I should be done in the next few days.

IF you do not receive your print by the end of January, let the website know and they’ll forward the query to me. I use a postage meter and can check the actual ship date, to make sure one was sent. Then I’ll send a replacement print, if need be.

Thanks for the good folks at BRIDGE TO THE STARS for sponsoring this wonderful giveaway, and thanks to those who have commented on Tim Kirk’s artwork, which is (as always) just amazing.

  18. Molly says:

i personally think that phillip pullman is a sick freak for writing these atheiest books just because he hated C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. THEIR DEAD! He needs to get over it. They were great authors and he is so freaking stupid and if anyone wants to send this along to him PLEASE do. I am boycotting this and my friends have sent my comments to the publishers and producers. srry for those who like him, but if i ever meet the guy…>:(

  19. ian says:

No he wrote the books for everybody to understand them.

    Athiests- fantasy
Catholics- recreation of the same Genesis (a good one, not evil)
    Children- free will
Santism- God is evil (I dont think so)

  20. ian says:

You see, Pullman makes his work appeal to all your beliefs. Remember his answer to the “what are your books about?” question? He usually answers “it is the democracy of the reader” or something. Here are more examples:

Pessimists- negative (insults) to their religuous or spiritual beliefs
Anybody- a pure fantasy-fiction adventure to keep you entertained
Other beliefs- if it just doesn’t work out for their belief, then it teaches good virtues

Just because Pullman is an Atheist (sorry for misspellings) doesn’t mean people can criticize his work for it. (personly, being Roman Catholic, as long as he lives his life for good purpose, he is a good person)

  21. Nadeen says:

    Molly,

Pullman did not write the books in answer to C.S. Lewis-someone else compared his books to the Narnia series. There are plenty of interviews on line where Pullman discusses how he came to write the Dark Materials trilogy. Why don’t you check some of them out?

As for Lewis and Tolkien, it is not required that everyone admire their writings and in Lewis’s case Pullman says he does not like the Narnia books, but he agrees with Lewis’s opinions about writing for children.

Perhaps the religious aspects of the book don’t bother me so much because I am an atheist, but what struck me was the relationships and the sacrifices that most of the major characters make, some of them quite unexpected.

If you have not read the books, please do so. It is so much more satisfying to dislike something because of your own experiences rather than because an authority told you to do so.

BTTS-sorry but I could not let this pass.

  22. Salmairion says:

    Molly,

First of all, if you don’t like Pullman’s books, fine, but then why do you even bother posting a comment on this site??
Second, I don’t understand why people feel the need to compare C.S. Lewis’ work to Pullman’s all the time. They have different views, why can’t you accept that, everybody’s entitled to their own opinion! At least I think so…
I’m agnostic, and personnally i think the moral and philisophical side of the books is really inspiring and quite beatiful. It’s about free will, and learning how to use that power to do the right things, and so on. Plus, it’s a very entertaining fantasy & sci-fi story, with creatures and parallel universes, etc…
And finally, it has heartwarming relationships and all the universal virtues.
I’m sorry that people can’t see that, but then again I suppose that most books and films can be interpreted very differently.
Still, I don’t understand how people can criticise something without first thinking thouroughly about it…
    Anyway, that’s all.

  23. Salmairion says:

PS: i think it’s quite sad and honestly pathetic that you feel the need to boycott such a great work of fiction! sorry, i just HAD to say it.

  24. Skye says:

Molly: I thought we were through with this… That was random.

Marco: A Mac? You mean a Macintosh computer? (As in Apple?)

Also, what’s up with the lack of news, guys?

  25. matt says:

Yeah! Lack of news, c’mon guys

  26. Conor says:

I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE DISCRIMANAINT OTHER PEOPLE FOR THERE LOOKS, BELEIVES, OR EVEN LIKES!!! GIVE OVER! PP WRITE GREAT BOOK’S AND IN THE TRILOGY HDM, HE CLEARLY STATES THAT THE AUTHORITY CLAIMED TO BE GOD AND INTERVIERD WITH THE HUMAN’S, MULFEA, OR ANY OTHER CONCIUOS (spelling) WAY OF LIFE. HE ALSO STATES THAT THERE STILL MAY BE OR MAY NOT A GOD AND THAT THE AUTHORITY WAS A FAKE GOD (like romain gods) BUT THE AUTHORITY HAD THE POWER WAS ACTUALLY REAL!! AND AS I AM A ROMAN CATHOLIC AND I REA THE BOOKS AND ENJOYED THEM, I DIDN’T FEEL OFFENDED ONE BIT BECAUSE PP WAS NOT DISCRIMINATING PEOPLES BELEIVES. IF SO THE BOOKS WOULD NOT GET PUBLISHED!!!!!!!

  27. Conor says:

  31. George Beahm says:

    RE: LYRA PRINTS

I’m shipping out the last of the prints tomorrow, on January 11, 2008. So please don’t query poor Ian about possible non-delivery until at least TWO WEEKS has gone by. These went out by first class mail, in a mailing tube, and should reach their destinations within a week, so keep your eyes open for them.

I ran out of the film strips from the GOLDEN COMPASS trailer, so I have enclosed the print only.

Best to you all, George Beahm

  32. Greg says:

Not to join in on the gang-like beatdown on Molly, but her punctuation and grammar suck. Seriously, If you plan on posting hateful comments about something on a website devoted to it, at least act like someone who should be taken seriously.

  33. ian says:

Is it just me, or has everyone fled to hisdarkmaterials.org?

I hope this threat will wake you guys up!

  34. drama queen says:

i think this website has been abandoned for good………. nothing has happened except that we have been writing on it……………..

  35. Conor says:

arghhh…. they have all been killed..

    DAM YOU POTATOEs,

remember kids eat at least 5 fruit or veg a day… potatoes dont count… there FILLERS!!!

    PAY ATENTION IN CLASS

  36. drama queen says:

    why dam potatoes…………. i like potatoes………….

  37. jammer says:

yay, I got my Lyra Print and film strip! Thanks so much!

  38. John L says:

New Line’s net LOSS on the film is $118 million.

  39. Jammer says:

    source?

  40. Foulksy says:

    there is news on hisdarkmaterials.org…

    BTTS there is news!!!

neraly a month to go without news… 22nd it will be a month!!!

Where did you get the news that the golden compass was a LOSS when others are saying the film has profited!!!

  41. Yelbakk says:

    http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=GoldenCompass.htm

As of January 15th, the figures are:
    Production Budget: $180 million
    Domestic Gross: $67,513,776
    Foreign Gross: $233,851,042
    = Worldwide: $301,364,818

    Y.

  42. John L says:

New Line gets a flat dollar amount of $55 million on the foreign gross, and U.S. gross is unbelievably low. Worst performance ever by far for anything of its type.

  43. John L says:

New Line spent $180M to produce film and an additional $30M to promote it, for a total expenditure of $210M. They get $55M for sale of foreign distribution rights and aprox. 52 percent of U.S. gross of $70M. Do the math…it is a DISASTER. They were banking on $300M in the United States. It will never happen…film did only $75,000 nationwide yesterday…$92 per theater! Doesn’t even pay to run the popcorn popper.

  44. jammer says:

Did you forget the foreign rights they sold? They didn’t end up paying for a lot of the movie.

  45. John L says:

Of course I included the foreign rights…as I stated, they got $55 million for them. Already included in the calculation.

  46. jammer says:

If I recall, New Line had 70-80% of the budget covered for by foreign investors. They really only paid about 45 million in the long run. Where exactly did you get your figures?

  47. Nadeen says:

Thanks jammer-my question exactly. John L. is correct that the disappointing U.S. box office puts the making of the sequels in jeapardy but I am waiting for NEW LINE to make the announcement (or Pullman, I’d believe him)before I write them off completely.

Whatever the sequel situation the Worldwide Distribution Pres.of New Line seems very please with the overseas gross.

  48. Foulksy says:

where did you get that infomation John L

If you look back on previous articles (EVEN BTTS HAS IT AND IT STATES BY NEW LINE THAT THEY SOLD 70-80% OF THE FOREIGN RIGHTS)

  49. Daviddatsme says:

I’m from Canada, but I live in Ireland! Doh!!!!!!!
