An evening with Philip Pullman at the Pegasus Theatre
Posted on by Ian

The Oxford Mail reports that Philip Pullman is to appear at a fundraiser for the redevelopment of the Pegasus Theatre in Oxford, which Pullman is a patron of, on November 17th. Wine and light refreshments are included in the evening. How to buy tickets and further details about the evening can be found here.

Update: The Pegasus Theatre fundraiser in Oxford has been moved. It will go ahead, as previously announced, on November 17th. It has however been moved from the theatre to St. John’s College, and it will start earlier than previously listed. It will now start at 7PM. There has also been a slight alteration in the ticket price and they are priced at £100 per person. It’s suggested that new price reflects the fact that Pullman has agreed to do more than first anticipated. Quite what this may be we’re not sure – a signing perhaps? You can read more about the event here, and the phone number book tickets through the Pegasus Theatre box office is 01865 722851.

Just to let anyone thinking of going know, the tickets are £100 each and the venue has changed from the Pegasus Theatre to St Johns College in Oxford (and it starts earlier than advertised at 7.00pm).

  5. Ian says:

Thanks for the tip off Chris! I’ve now added that to the news page.

That’s a big jump – from £35 to £100! Not sure if my student loan will stretch to it…

  7. Kinders says:

Has the discussion on Monday at St. Mary’s been reported elsewhere? Shouldn’t there be a mention of that as well (especially since – I think – it’s free!)?

The Pegasus Theatre website has been updated with the following information:

Philip Pullman, award – winning author and patron of Pegasus Theatre, features in a fundraising event for the theatre’s Building The Future redevelopment campaign.

The title Butterfly Soup comes from Philip’s explanation of his method of writing:

“The writing process is much more like what goes on inside a chrysalis when a caterpillar changes into a butterfly. The parts of the caterpillar aren’t unbolted one by one and reassembled in a different order according to a manual: the entire substance breaks down into a sort of soup, and gradually a butterfly comes together, something utterly different.”

The evening, which will kick off with wine and canapés, will include performances by members of Oxford Youth Theatre and a reading from a brand new work by Philip, yet to be published.

He will also be in conversation with his publisher David Fickling who has a small but important local imprint that has produced some of the most acclaimed ‘crossover’ books (appealing to both adults and children) in the past few years. David will be joined on stage for the interview by a group of young participants from the theatre. Their questions will delve into his love of storytelling, the power of performance, his passion for the arts, education and his long-standing support of Pegasus.

There will be a raffle draw and a book signing session at the end of the evening.

    style: A special fundraising evening
    length:Approx. 120 minutes
min. age: 10 years and above
info: The ticket price will include wine and light refreshments. All proceeds will go towards Pegasus Theatre’s Building the Future campaign.
