Well, released in the UK at least…
I’m excited though, hopefully mine will arrive before the weekend…
It’s also nice to see it move up DVD charts like Amazon, the bluray version seems to be selling really well.
Time flie, I remember when we learn the release date.. Can’t wait to get mine.
i got my 2 disc edition today, but it claims to be ‘extended.’ So far I haven’t seen any evidence of this. What gives?
It’s probably just due to being shown at the correct frame rate but the running time of the Blu-Ray version is 113 mins, whereas the normal DVD’s are 108 mins.
I also don’t recall the 3 trailers being on the US DVD (which I got a couple of weeks ago) which are included on the UK 2 disc versions.
The front of the DVD and the interior of the Blu-ray claims “Extended Edition”.
Was this a mistake I wonder? Technically they should not be allowed to state you are buying an extended version if in fact it is the plain old cinema version.
People would have the right to bring the dvd/blu-ray back to the shop and demand a refund for false content.
The Blu-ray looks great though!
I do have to agree with you Rory – it’s all a bit suspect really. But to be honest I suspect they’re just overegging what it is in order to try and increase the number of purchases… Annoying but typical I guess. Need to get hold of my copy still…
I found another review of the DVD here:
http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movies.php?id=687&show=review
The Blu-ray version does sound awesome. It’s almost enough to make me go get a Blu-ray player… But not quite.
Oh, I forgot to add this…
I agree with that article when they say it would have been wonderful as an animated movie. Is there any chance of this ever happening? (I’m thinking Hayao Miyazaki, myself…)
I’m getting the 2 disc set on normal DVD. Not getting blu-ray because a. I don’t have a bluray player and b. i can’t put bluray on a ps2. So yeah, I’ll enjoy the special features.
Here in the Netherlands it won’t come out untill somewhere in july 🙁 Normally we get big releases around the same time as the rest of the world. We even get Harry Potter dvd’s a few days early most of the time.
The same thing is happening with Narnia. We had the first movie the same day everyone else got to see it. But Prince Caspian won’t come out untill 7 july, while it’s release in the US is 16 may. Stupid delays…. 🙁
2 disc blu ray. Getting it on Saturday with Once Upon a Time in the North. Buy it people! We need a Director’s cut.
“As it is, the final product runs almost like a really good trailer for a better, nonexistent film.”
Hell yeah, I want the goddamn director’s cut right now! Right now!! *phew
Picked up my copy of The Golden Compass today. Got the extended version and can’t wait to see the extras! I was lucky, Best Buy had a special price, I had a $5 coupon from the newspaper and a $5 gift card from buying a printer a few months ago so it only cost me about $13. And there was a special third disk from Best Buy about the movie with an additional 45 minutes of cast interviews. Will watch it later.
Sounds like I’m going to Best Buy…
I hate it when they do things like that, though. It’s so frustrating when you’ve already gotten it somewhere else.
Haha! Skye, sounds like you had ‘Spirited Away’ on the brain up there… but I agree it would be fantastic. But I can wait for an animated version. I think they should just stick to finishing up the live action versions right now. 🙄 heh
I love how Weitz referred to Roger Parslow as “Rodge the Dodge” on his DVD commentary. He seems like a nice guy, and I have a feeling that his commentary does not tell the whole story involving the studio’s role in modifying his cut of the film. He did talk about changes, but didn’t get into specifics as to the original cut.
The documentaries are excellent, very insightful. Pullman does not shy away from the religious influences in his interview, either. He makes it quite clear it is a retelling of Paradise Lost and Chapter III of Genesis.
I got my 3-disk special edition from BestBuy today – yes, there is a 3-disk edition exclusively from BestBuy. I haven’t watched the 3rd bonus disk yet, but it says, “Bonus Disc includes 40 additional minutes of behind-the-scenes featurette.” Probably content that’s already on YouTube, but I had to get it, and for some reason they only charged me $22 for this 3-disk special when it was marked as $36!
I am actually impressed with the DVD. It has some great special features on it. The documentaries on the second disc equal up to about two hours and fifty minutes, and if you buy the Best Buy one, the third disc adds an extra forty minutes, and believe it or not, they are an entertaining forty minutes. Then, of course, there is the film and commentary.
I would say this is a very solid DVD release. I was afraid that New Line may go Harry Potter on this release and give really crappy (or short) special features, but rest assured, this is not the case.
Darn sarnit, shoulda got the BestBuy one…
Whatever, I love the 2-disc DVD and, agreed, I am thoroughly impressed with the packaging, the presentation, and the content. All top-notch and well worth the 24+tax Canadian$.
So there’s no deleted scenes or anything? Like that clip when Lyra visits Asriel’s cottage?
Or the clip they USED IN THE COMMERCIAL FOR THE DVD of Pan turning away from the mouse he scares by turning into a cat?
Nope. No use of any of that.
There is a very brief clip of one deleted scene in the visual commentary on the Blu-ray disc, where the Jack Russell Dog Daemon of the nurse sees Lyra hiding under the bed and barks but because they have been ‘incised’ the nurse doesn’t react.
When does Lyra hide under the bed? I don’t remember this part.
It is in Bolvanger, Mrs Coulter enters a room with numerous doctors and nurses and discusses the three missing children. When Mrs Coulter leaves, Lyra makes a noise and is discovered and captured. It does look more like a table but Chris Weitz refers to it in the commentary as a bed.
Thats kind of weird that there’s no deleted scenes. Because hope for the sequel is not looking good and after all that work with cutting out the ending? Kind of a waste.
it really annoys me that there are no deleted scenes.. HOWEVER, in the extended version.. arent there like tiny extensions?
like i swear int cinema i dont rmember fra pavel saying bout how he followed asriels exploits closely; at the cinema it went ‘lemme introduce fra pavel’; ‘ah thats waht the smell is’
…however, despite these slight extensions, THEY STILL NEVER SHOWED THE KISS TO MRS COULTER WEHN SHE ASKS
it wud ahve bin so good to ahve shown the kiss, jus to instil the fact coulter ahs control over lyra agin, but the fact they didnt show it completely devalues the whole argument!
urghhh peez me off .
anyway .
i want a directors cut . i basically want the proper cut – wehn the film was atchee a reasonable version of the book .
xxx
“like i swear int cinema i dont rmember fra pavel saying bout how he followed asriels exploits closely; at the cinema it went ‘lemme introduce fra pavel’; ‘ah thats waht the smell is’” -John-Coram
Nope, he says it in the theatre too. I can confirm with 100% certainty.
Although I HAVE seen one theatre in my city carry a broken reel that cuts off Asriel’s line about how he intends to go to other universes to find the source of Dust (!). I can only imagine how confused that audience was. *sobs*
Yeah, That was in theatre version. I couldn’t really spot any differences. Did iorek grab the soldier by the head and swing him away in theatre version?
But that was the only thing for me. A bit like the Edward Scissorhands ‘Extended Version’ which is also the same as the existing version, at least to my eyes. What gives?
Well, there’s no extended version. The only unseen footage so far is in the video-game (Asriel’s lab, Lyra falling from Lee’s ship and being captured by the bears, and being taken to Bolvangar by the samoieds) and some glimpses in behind-the-scenes videos and trailers – for instance, Pan turning into cat before a real cat, the Magisterial Emissary saying “Her loyalty will be put to a proper test”, soldiers breaking through Jordan College, Lyra raising the fire alarm, moments of the original ending, etc.
Unfortunately, the theatrical cut is the only availiable version until now. But the lack of extra scenes gives me hope for a most superior director’s cut.
They only have the one disc release where i am!!!!
The copy aren’t coming to my country before May the 20! And it does not look like were going to get the 2-disc DVD!
Surely cant one of those foreign rights companies buy the full rights!!!!! i want a SK
WARNER BROTHER, THE DVD`S ARE SELLING WELL! DOES THIS NOT SHOW YOU THAT THE FANS WANT TO SEE THE OTHER TWO FILMS THE SEQUEL OF WHAT WAS STARTED, PLEASE DON`T LEAVE IT LIKE THIS.
Having found both the single and ‘extended’ versions on sale today… i leapt at the chance to pay 10 more for the extensions…
of which there are none. have a look at the box, does it say ‘directors cut’ or ‘deleted scenes’? no? didn’t think so (there was a security tag hiding the last couple words).
i’m afraid we’ve been played… they know how much we’re pining for more, and so they stuck the ‘extended’ label on, found some cast/interview footage they could recycle, and hoped we’d fall for it…
i nearly did… i’m just glad i turned it over.
i’m not saying i don’t want the extras, but they dont extend the feature film in any way… it’s being missold.
It says “Platinum Edition” on the North American release that I own, I don’t know why the UK release has dubious packaging. I have no clue why your copy says “Extended Edition.”
Maybe they were planning on releasing the extended edition now, but changed their minds, holding it for a later date.
I think this is possible because the overseas DVD studio releasing TGC normally gets the materials from the US studio. So if the UK release says “extended edition” it means New Line initially planned on releasing the extended version, but changed their minds, and unfortunately the UK studio used the old “extended” title rather than changing it to the newer updated one (which perhaps New Line never sent them).
In a way, it’s good news as it sort/kind of confirms that New Line ARE working on the extended edition. Obviously they must have a reason for releasing it later rather than now.
I’m not getting either DVD’s. =/
I mean seriously, there’s not even deleted scenes on that so-called Extended Edition!
I’m waiting for that damn REAL Extended Edition… ¬¬
Get the DVD there may be no deleted scenes, but the documataries are worth it.
The Golden Compass DVD is the top selling DVD in the UK this week and I would think in most other countries, HELLO!! WARNER BROTHER are you watching this. The fans want the sequals, Please Please
