USA Today have reported that the first public trailer for The Golden Compass will be shown from May 25th onwards, attached to the third Pirates of the Caribbean film. We’ve contacted New Line to see if they will confirm this, but the timing – shortly after Cannes – and the somewhat shared demographic of the two films makes it a very likely possibility. USA Today also featured a new Golden Compass poster in their print edition, which is shown left. Click the image or click here to view it up close.

Homer, from the teaser trailer that you’ve seen does it look like the tone of the movie will be as dark as the book or is it being portrayed as a more light-hearted fantasy? I’m just curious because I hope it’s the former and not the latter!
Thanks in advance if you respond.
LOREK ISNT LYRAS DAEMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“When I saw it, it started with a looong (≈30 sec), slightly cheesy thing with the One Ring spinning in the air and slowly fading into a compass before landing in snow. All while text comes on saying stuff like “From the studio that brought you The Lord of the Rings†yada yada yada…” (quote from Homer)
That’s too bad, I was really hoping the film would be advertised as its own entity and not The Lord of the Rings part 2…I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this film’s only connection to LOTR that it’s being produced by New Line? Plus, referencing LOTR in the teaser seems more appropriate for a parody film like Epic Movie…excuse me while I go shudder for a moment…*shudders*
Vaka, it’s the only way to get an adult audience. Most people who’ve read the books are in their 20s because when the books came out we were in elementary school therefore reading fantasy books about little girls.
You’ll be surprised how many people have never heard of the series in their 30s or 40s.
Good point, I guess planting that connection in people’s heads would be a good way to dispel the notion that it’s a kiddie movie…and wow, you pretty much just described me, I was 9 when first book came out…I’ve been waiting waaaay too long for this film.
i think of pan as fry pan……sad,i know.
so i will have to go all the way to Cambridge to see the trailer……. i live in Ely tht is just off Cambridge and in Ely is the maltings….. it shows all the films when the big cinema is done with the films…… i went to see lotr, hp and pan’s labyrinth……..
at the maltings (i for got tht bit)
I cant wait for the trailer.
I hope it doesnt put too much emphasis on “epic”, it would come across seeming like yet another epic fantasy released in december. Like Eragon *shudder*
HDM is primarily personal, and i hope the movies and trailers reflect that.
Well the poster looks great!
Maaan they are filming damn movie too slow!
I just hope there will be more acting and less effects. Cause Dark Materisals is REALLY not about effects (except maybe the 3rd part, the battle and all…)… and as I look to other fantasy films… well as the book is not like the other books I just hope that the movie woun’t be like other fantasy movies.
Ive read the Trilogy and from what Ive read and heard this is going to be a kickass movie just like Narnia.
To stay on topic:
This seems to be a weird bit of news. Pirates of the Caribbean is a Disney film. TGC is a New Line/Warner Bros (Time Warner) film. But hey….anything’s possible in Hollywood.
I saw Pirates last night, and there was no HDM trailer. But this may just be because I’m in Australia.
