Philip Pullman on Writing & HDM Sequel
Posted on by Will

The Guardian have an interview with Philip Pullman on books and writing. Philip talks about his favourite books, his method of writing – painful – and advice for budding authors. The last question of the article asks what Pullman is working on next; he replies “A sequel to His Dark Materials. But I can't say more than that. It's going to be a long book, and I'm only part way through it.” Presumably he means The Book of Dust, an ongoing project which has become rather large – or possibly a new chapter in His Dark Materials altogether. Read the interview.

I still prefer the origina covers, but these are pretty cool as well.

(the second and third ones aren't loading properly >.>)

2. Reedie_Belacqua says:

Beautiful!!!!!!!!!
the spanish version isn't this beautiful
I love the TAS one.

3. Alex says:

ehmm…junior editions? what does that entail?

4. jesssia says:

interesting take on the windows in TSK.

5. lordroke says:

These covers are absolutely gorgeous. Their style and depiction of the settings comes awfully close to what I envisaged in my head whilst reading the books. I may just have to order these books, despite already owning the original versions of them. 🙂

6. Lizzietiffon01 says:

2 me the subtle knife one is the best, with the piercing eyes of the cat and Will's supernatural entrance. Ci gazze is perfect, and the greatest backdrop for Will's imposing electric figure.

i love the one with Lyra and Will running across the bridge, too on the amber spyglass front. It catches such a spirit of adventure and is just the wildest, most imaginative scene to catch readers' eyes.

to me it looks like the weakest cover is the northern lights. Seems a bit faded and not the awe inspiring piece of art it could be. oh well. i think its a neat i dea to have the animals/daemons on the covers, though. the northern lights one lets down once again, though, as i think Iorek looks way too cuddily and naive. Too young-he should be king of the bears!!!

it looks promising, though i don't think these should be the final copies. the northern lights one could be improved loads, its composition, though strong and well thought out, needs to be bolder and altogether more sriking and dynamic if these things are going to be marketed.

🙂 :wassat:  🙁

7. Lizzietiffon01 says:

can't wait for the classic versions! they should be…..er…….classy?

8. Skye says:

Well… They do look nice, but I have this thing about not buying books that have "now a major motion picture!" or something of the sort on the front. Perhaps it appeals to people who wouldn't read the book otherwise, but certainly not to me.
As for "Will's supernatural entrance"… These covers have more of a sci-fi feel than they should, I think. After all, the window between the worlds is supposed to be an unnoticeable thing unless you look at it just right, remember? 'twould be rather hard to miss the one on the cover.
But don't get me wrong here. I do like the cats on the top. Not that I'll be buying them; I've got the ones that say "His Dark Materials" along the spines when you put them together. Can't top that. 🙂

9. MaxRide says:

umm.. jounior version? is that like the disney channel junior novels? i hopr not. leave the books alone!! its bad enuf tere's gonna be a movie!!!!!!

10. Willl says:

Max – I don't think they're 'junior' editions in the sense that the content is changed. Remember the fuss when that was tried with Narnia? They dropped those fairly quickly. In the UK we've not had editions with daemons and bears on the front before; they've been rather sombre covers featuring the alethiometer, the subtle knife and the amber spyglass.

If they have changed the contents then they'd have some nerve in putting 'winner of the Carnegie Medal' on the front!

11. Libby says:

I have a UK Northern Lights that has Lyra, Pan, and Iorek on the cover, but my TSK and TAS just feature the knife and spyglass, it's true.

I adore these covers, actually. Like others, my favorite is TSK's.

12. bball_brilliant says:

On TAS cover wut were those flying figures suposed to be? Specters or somewut? I really like the new covers. and i love it that they're making a movie. MaxRide i know wut you're thinking the people will only watch the movie instead of reading the trilogy. i think that is RUBBISH!!!!! When HP came out it made me want to read the books even more cause i know that movies based on books r never better on the movie than than they're in the books. if u dont think that u r an idiot

13. silvertongue says:

#*@% !!! this book isnt for little kids !! [ but the covers rokk !!! ]

14. Lizzietiffon01 says:

I think they're harpies bball_brilliant.

15. BantamBuyer says:

Hey – don't get stressed about the "Children's Edition". It doesn't mean that they are changing the text.

All it means is that the book will have a different cover depending upon which section of the book shop you buy it in. If it's the Children's section one cover, the adult's section another cover.

Publishers often do this for transitional books that appeal to both readers. Apparently some adults are put off a book if the cover is too childlike, and some children are put off if the cover is too formal.

Whatever happened to the saying "Don't judge a book by its cover"

16. Froggal says:

I have to say that I don't really think these books are meant for children under like 7th grade…but the covers do look kind of cool…….I like the first ones better though…also, I was wondering, what does the lionlike thing on the Amber Spyglass cover represent?

17. andraea says:

holy flip they look fantastic!
maybe once my own copies die from being overread, i'll have to spring to buy those ones.
i LOVE the cover for TSK.

18. minstrelinthegallery says:

Is that Stelmaria on TAS cover?

19. Jammer says:

For some reason the covers remind me of Animorphs

20. Lizzy says:

Very pretty, although it would be nice if they put a pine marten on there… well, I guess that might spoil it for when Pan settles, but then again, how would anyone know? :wassat:

21. Arya says:

Wow!!! This is cool. but on the cover of TAS is that Stelmaria or Kirjava?

22. bball_brilliant says:

I bet it is Kirjava. Stelmaria is a snow leopard. arent thay like white? :wassat:

23. minstrelinthegallery says:

On second glance, it most definitely is Kirjava, she did settle as a cat.

24. Annabel says:

You're all wrong, Kirjava was a black cat, remember? On this cover of TAS it's a cheetah, the daemon of King Ognuwe.

25. drama queen says:

i thought the thrid one was lord asreiels deamon (i forgot the name)
i like them and think tht they are beautiful……….

26. zem says:

snazzy, but unnecessary.

27. Annabel says:

But Stelmaria was a snow leapord- so white wih black spots. Unless she's just adapted the tone of the flames.

28. bball_brilliant says:

Maybe Annabel is right. I think that a picture of a zalif should be on the cover of TAS. Even though They were discribed a hundred times i never really got a clear picture in my head.

29. Willl says:

Try having a look at our fanart section: http://www.bridgetothestars.net/fanart/mulefa/

There's varying interpretations in there; I'd say the 7th one along gets the body closest to how I'd imagined them.
