An image of Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter, with her golden monkey daemon, has surfaced; with thanks to Situ for alerting us. It may be from the promotional brochure New Line have been sending out; although the consensus seems to have swung towards it probably being fake – it's an interesting image nonetheless, and fits well for a wallpaper. You can view the image here.
edit: Upon further investigation, it is actually a genuine scan from a New Line promotional booklet.
Sorry to say that it looks fake, in my opinion… :wassat:
Yes, the monkey's certainly not a live monkey, but perhaps it's just sort of a concept for what he'll look like once he's been digitally animated?
I'm not a primate expert but I think the deamon is a "golden lion tamarins" (Leontoithecus rosalia). This specie comes from the Atlantic Forest, in Brazil (where I live), so when I first read the book I've recongnise it 😉

here is the monkey.
it looks fake to me too :wassat:
i don't know.. i hope it's not like that
At least they refer to it as "Golden Monkey" and not "Ozymandias" 😉
Well-, it looks kind of fake to me. :wassat:
well, even if it is fake or something, it does look kind of sinister…..
Yeah, Kidman looks stunning in that picture, doesn't she?
I do a lot of photo editing and after taking a close look at it I doubt that it is genuine. If you zoom in, look in the small area on the left side of Kidman's neck. You can see the edge of the image of the monkey. Scrolling up, I noticed that this seam continues all the way up to the top. Surly with the budget New Line has given this movie, would they have published something like that?
i dunno. the monkey doesn't really look right to me. it doesn't at all look gold to me, and i don't understand why they made it it all blue if it supposidly is 'genuine'. if it was, they would show that its gold.
Deary me, you know its not actually blue? It is simply the way the picture is composed, the daemon is at the rear thus is changed to fit the background colour.
But yes, Fake. There are several giveaways.
Ursae – good spying; although it would be harder to spot at its native resolution (printed one assumes) and NL may have 'shopped it themselves.
well…i like it
fake or real…I like it
yes i know it may just be how the image is composed mr a, what with the monkey sort of fading with the background, but, i think what orange was getting at is… in the book there was such an emphasis on the color of the monkey. actually, i don't think they used the name of the daemon very often, rather than just describe it as the "Golden monkey"… i suppose the color is real important, so, why fade it blue? i duno… it's probably fake anyway.
i know the colour of the monkey is very important, i mean he's only called the "golden monkey" in the books. however,i think the whole fading thing isn't so bad. its just a cool-looking photography technique. come on people, im sure we'll see lots of other photos of the monkey and he'll be his true golden colour. i do like the image of the monkey, his whole composure is pretty much how i pictured him to look.
HOWEVER, i dont think the daemon thing should be the whole issue here. isn't anybody else bothered that mrs. coulter is supposed to have dark hair colour (medium/dark brown is suggested in the books) and is being made into a blonde?? why am i the only one bothered by this….. its the most obvious flaw in the picture, forget the monkey…..
<quote>being made into a blonde?? why am i the only one bothered by this…..</quote>
lolz you must be new here, welcome!
The blond hair doesn't bother me at all. To me, well, hair can't act.

That's possible, yes, but the whole thing strikes me as being very amateurish. If NL did release this as a publicity photo, why didn't they put the movie logos in there? And why didn't they put in their company logo to authenticate it?
I actually disagree that it's fake. Someone had to have gone to the trouble to print it out and scan it or else they're very good at capturing the subtle warp caused when scanning things. The line in the middle looks like the seam of the brochure (you can see the light shining on the curve of the page on the right side of it). In fact now that I look closer, it appears to be a booklet/catalog, which is the reason for the repeat (since when normally viewing the pages, the middle part is obscured…they are visible here because it has been squashed against the scanner).
The color of the monkey is simply to contrast his cold and cruel persona against Mrs. Coulter’s bright and attractive appearance. The picture of the monkey itself is probably just a stock monkey photo (probably a reference used for the actual CGI monkey in the film though, so it’s worth considering). The CGI's visuals are developed independently of the animation, so they usually aren't close to their final state until later in the movies post-production. So don’t expect anything more than stock photos or rough animatic models (like those seen on the official site for the armoured bears) for any of the CGI right now.
well, when reading the books, i always imagined her hair blonde anyway. i duno why.
yeeeeah: the golden monkey doesn't have a name. To cite Philip Pullmann: "The golden monkey doesn't have a name because every time I tried to think of one, he snarled and frightened me. What's more he hardly speaks either"
No, I don't recognize that exact species of monkey, I don't think, but it's extremely cool looking, still. Marisa's daemon looks exactly as I'd always pictured a daemon of hers to look. 🙂
It is totally fake. This image looks like something someone slapped together with Photoshop in under a minute. First of all, if it was a real publicity shot, wouldn't it have Mrs. Coulter holding the monkey/on her shoulder instead of an indistinct montage blended together. And don't you think it is a little strange that it uses an official image of Nicole Kidman already released, where we did not see the monkey? In addition to this, nothing looks more like this image was meant to be a desktop background/buddy icon than the words at the bottom "Daemon: Golden Monkey". Is this first grade? Bridge to the Stars, please remove this image and stop insulting our intelligence.
fake or not fake, wasn't the golden monkey supposed to have sleek, shiny hair?
i think it looks evil…. a bit…..
Nyahahaha
yes, it looks evil.
Let's suppose it's real.
Well, i'd say it's not how I imagined that..ejem, monkey ¬¬ (i hate him lol)
I pictured with the hands and face darker, and the hair golder xD
and with a completly different face
That monkey it's kind of cute, but i imagined him really ugly
maybe because i don't like him? xD
anyways, I want to see Paaaaan!
Defo think it is a fake, for both the quality and clipping issues pointed out already…forgery issues aside though, a type of monkey such as this *would* be in line with what I myself imagined the daemon to look like when reading the books. :wassat:
Most damningly, it resizes to within a pixel of the most common wallpaper size! I've updated the post to reflect most peoples' suspicious.
it is not in proper colour but once we see it in colour then i guess we will know cus all u peeps r talkin anbout,
the face should be darker tht sort of sh*t
well, even if it is fake, i'd say that it still looks ok. i mean, that is how i kinda pictured the monkey and all so i hope it does look something like that! and as for kidman, she looks AMAZING! even before i heard the book was to be a movie i had always pictured her to be mrs. coulter; she's got a dark side to her that she portrays really well but at the same time, she is irrisistably charming. i even pictured coulter with blonde hair too….
i TOTALLY agree with sarah and marie-leigh!!! i mean, this is a HORRIBE picture and what happened to mrs. coulter's dark, long hair???? i mean, have they even read the book???
sorry, i know i sound really mean, but i dunno….. this is not how i imagined it at all. well, i know it can't be like everyone imagines it, and i think phillip pullman thinks it's going good, but still….
also, orange, is that you, c? or someone else?
This is not how I pictured the Golden Monkey; I always imagined him as more beautiful and noble looking, not like some rejected kind of muppet. I apologize to the monkey, but he's a little too evil and creepy looking. The golden monkey is supposed to be like Coulter in that he looks sweet and innocent at first, but then the evil, cold side of him begins to show through. It's not until Mrs.Coulter and Lyra's fight about the handbag (before the party) that we begin to see the monkey as being evil.
i'm sorry, she's brilliant, but she is WRONG WRONG WRONG!
As a graphic designer I would say one hundred percent that it's a fake. The image retouching is very amateur but what really lets it down is the typography.
That's so obviously fake. They won't create any of the daemons until after it's all been filmed, anyway. Looks like fanart.
Actual the horizontal format and flat background makes the whole thing look like a trading card.
Each actor could have one with their deamon highlighted. The one problem would be the children since they don't have a set deamon yet. I hope their deamons change a lot in the movie, in the plays they were very limited to a few creatures and I missed that magical feel of them changing and adapting to each situtaion like the books.
Hello!I am from Russia and I understand you very bad :wassat:
But I can say, that she is very wrong on the foto1 😉
but she looks fantastic!monckey is very ugly,I think :laughing:And I think her hair is rad :wassat:like a witch!
I think people are confusing "photoshopped" with "fake". Of course it's a photoshop, the question is whether it's an official one or not. If it's fake then why did someone talented enough to create the subtle effects of a scanned image not do a better job on the rest of the image? It's obviously a quick thrown together presentation that wasn't meant to be seen by the general public.
Yes, your right, it is the golden lion tamarin, it fits the charastaristic clawed fingers and vigilant eyes.
Monkey is not fake for me but Kidman…… :wassat:I think she is not right person for this great movie!!!!!!!!!!!(Craig is fake, too, they will never be a good coupleeeeee!!!!!!!!!Yuckkkkkkkk :wassat:
I AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i don't agree! Craig and Kidman will be the big cinema couple of the year…you will see! Very big…
I suppose it's fake simply because of the text. It's the story characters who have daemons, not the actors. So it should read "Mrs. Coulter", "Daemon: Golden Monkey", as on the official movie web page. Let's just have some more patience until the genuine pictures come out.
this photo is taken from the distributers brochure. not meant for public view. it is part of a booklet meant to familiarize the hundreds of people throughout the world, whose job it is to sell the movie in their various countries. those distibuters have many films to market and sell, including the GC. most of their audiences have no knowledge of the books. the distributers themselves may not have read, so the booklet is simply a tool. i'm sure the monkey photo is based the films cobcept, but it is probably not finished. hope this helps
:wassat: Talk about photoshop! 😉
