Philip Pullman writes in The Times today of his love of libraries and the necessity to preserve them in an increasingly internet dominated age, praising the Love Libraries movement launched this week. “Libraries of every sort are treasure houses. I love them, I cherish them, I use them all the time, I could not bear to live in a society without them.” Read more.

You're quite right! That's where the internet excells – building communities.

I must note, I haven't ever heard anyone actually argue that libraries are unecessary. It does annoy me though that mine at home has installed several computers which appear to be solely for childrens' games; which invariably leads to them being dominated by aforementioned small humans after school time. Or as a babysitting centre..

  6. Wytchbabi says:

yeah. b4 i moved there was a library w/ a frankly horrible selection, but the computers were new and LOADED w/ games. kids of all ages would come to the library just to play the dumb games. that is NOT what libraries are for!

  7. Alewyn says:

Agreed. My public library is inhabited by the jerks of our town so that they can play games for hours and claim that they're doing homework.
I volunteer there; I love my library.

not sure whether anyone else has read the full artical and picked up on this part…"Only a week ago I spent some time in the Oxford public library’s local history department, looking through old maps of the city for a scene in a novel I’m writing now."…most likely the book of dust…he's finally getting on with it 🙂
