Kyra from the forums spotted that some new crew members have joined the team working on the film adaptation of The Golden Compass. Nick Davis (of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Troy and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, among many other commercial successes) will be the visual effects supervisor; Monty L. Simons (Collateral, Spider-Man 2, Hellboy) joins as the stunt co-ordinator (for “pre-vis, motion capture sequence”, according to IMDB); and Sara Romilly (Monster-in-Law, Blade, The Cell) arrives as post-production supervisor. It's all looking interestingly commercial…

if they're getting a bigger crew, that might mean auditions are comming up soon!!! 🙂
Very… Impressive. Is there any question now that the movie will be a BIG commercial success? Don\'t think so, if there ever was such a question. Lucky Pullman…
commercial…uh-oh
LOL. That\'s what I first thought too. Opened my Christmas presents two hours ago – YAY. MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Woohoo, things are moving! Wait, Chrstmas? *Checks time*
*Goes to bed*
MERRRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!
I hope that they are soon! My dad started buying \"The Stage\" for me for weeks…until the expenses became to much. HURRY UP WITH AUDITIONS!!!
Ps. Merry Xmas!!! Remember to avoid ALL mistletoe. If you\'re caught underneath it, run.
Now, why would you say that about the mistletoe? 😉
Scuse me, but what does "commercial" mean?
And also, if they are opening up auditions, would they post it up for everyone to know? Or would they send it out to Talent Agencies and let the members of those agencies know about it? How did Newline get a cast for Lord of the Rings? Open auditions? But it's good to know they haven't forgotten about the movie and left it there. That would make me worry.
Commercial means that they'll make it like Harry Potter – all the crappy merchandise, and it'll be more about making money than making a quality film. Lord of the Rings didn't have open auditions, but if they're smart they will for HDM, because the perfect Lyra/Will might be out there and not even have an agent.
I've been checking 2 reliable HDM websites, hoping that the guys will post summat on auditions (GASP, the A word!) for everyone. I've written PP himself for help, cuz i want more info. but nuthin i've done really has done anythin. I've been improving my acting tho…if anyone else is interested in auditioning, feel free to follow my tips: keep your eyes peeled and get involved in as much theatre as possible!
What two websites?
And what do you want to audition for?
I don\'t know about any auditions, but I do know about http://www.philip-pullman.com.I just read Pullman\'s September 2005 letter over there, and now I\'m wishing I had read it sooner. His letter discusses global warming, and I recommend anyone reading this that they have a good look at that letter.
As for the movie and the auditions (if they do take place): good luck to any of you hopefuls out there! 🙂
Lol, the link got messed up up there, it\'s actually http://www.philip-pullman.com
Why do I trouble myself? Hmm, I really don\\\\\\\'t know. Anyway: by commercial I mean that the movie would be making a whole lot of money. I was referring to the fact that the books have a very powerful religious/philosophical undercurrent which I personally find very attractive, and which I also find distinguishes Pullman\\\\\\\'s work from others\\\\\\\'. That\\\\\\\'s also why, for example, fears were voiced by New Line that the movies would be \\\\\\\"financially unviable\\\\\\\" (i.e. – wouldn\\\\\\\'t make money) in the US, because the books were being branded as blasphemous by certain people. That\\\\\\\'s also why Wietz (from American Pie) who is apperently a scriptwriter for the movie, according to the BBC, removed references to God and the Church in his script.
I don\\\\\\\'t know if others feel this way, but, with enough sound and special affects, and with especially with any alterations made in the script, that whole aspect of the books would be lost to viewers, who would probably see it as just another special affects fest for the senses. I must admit that I don’t know all the details , nor do I know the exact time-frame in which all this (may have) happened, but it seems that Pullman is satisfied with the movie-making process up till now. So basically, I just hope the movies don’t kill the message of the books in a bid to make money, thus the term “commercialâ€Â.
kyrabelacqua, the 2 websites r this one and hisdarkmaterials.org. i want to audition for Lyra.
Well who doesn't want to be Lyra? (I answer myself: all the guys who want to be Will) People will be extremely angry if they don't have open auditions. AND let's not forget that, like it or not, Lyra is from Oxford, which is solidly in England.
What's that supposed to mean? I may be an american, but that doesn't mean i can't act like i've lived in Oxford all my life…i don't think…
I for one will bring out the torches and pitchforks if there isn't open auditions!
And it doesn't matter where she's from, it is acting, after all! I'm (hopefully) auditioning for Lyra, too.
Why don't you all go and get yourself agents so that if they don't hold open auditions you won't feel it necessary to become suicidal?
Do please note the stinging sarcasm in above post.
I believe the actress that plays Lyra should be British. I have no reasoning or explanation for this; it\'s just the way I feel. BTW, I\'m American so I feel this is an objective opinion.
I agree with Angelina…but I'm American…and want to be Lyra…so…
I believe that the only exception to a little Brit would be me
Ditto on both counts.
Er, how exactly do the appointments of Davis, Simons, and Romilly make it sound "commercial"??? They were chosen because of their experience, skills and knowledge, and they know how to do the job. They're not advertising marketeers, so don't get your anti-commercialised underwear tied up in knots.
By the way, if you're over the age of 12 (or look older than 12), please don't audition for Lyra or Will.
lemme guess, you're 11 or 12? i understand your point of view, i was that way too.
whered you get the information?
You mean about those people being hired?
From pro.imdb.com, of course!
And as for making it commercialised, they mean because those people have only worked on :ahem: blockbuster, commercial films, not art-house ones or anything like that.
But that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad, or anything, though. It just a worry…
By the way Wytchbabi, how old are you?
Quite. Look at their CVs (resumes). Their experience, skills and knowledge would appear to be in producing more mainstream films. That is all.
15. but i look slightly younger.
does anybody here actually have an agent? is it hard to get one? probably.
*sidles up to Wytchbabi*
I'll be your agent
*jumps*
It's not so hard to get an agent as an actor if you're pretty and you can act and are willing to. If you want an agent just so that you can play Lyra or Will, you'd better get your hiking boots out, for yours is an uphill struggle.
Get lost Ian. and yeah, about those hiking boots…
Wytchbabi, get a username… then we fellow Lyra-hopefuls may all talk together in the forum!
As for an agent, I used to have one. :crying:
By the way, Ian, you can be my agent.
Okay, this post was a bit far up, but I read it and it kind of ticked me off.

By the way, if you're over the age of 12 (or look older than 12), please don't audition for Lyra or Will
Now, don't flame me if you disagree, but you can be older if you want to play Lyra! I'm 13 and I want to be her! Let me point out some examples: William Mosley in the Chronicles of Narnia is 17 years old made to look like he's, oh, around 14 in my opinion! Jeremy Sumpter was 13 when he did the Peter Pan movie made to look like he was 10. They have "Makeup Artists" who do an extremely good job of making people look younger. And if anything, they can graphiclly alter anything wrong with the actor/actress. It is the acting and talent that mainly counts. Leave the looks to the makeup artists with more experience.
As far as agents, I'm in the process of getting one! I read that if you have an agent, you will most likely be notified before an open audition.
I think very few people would agree with you either that William Moseley looks younger than 17 in Narnia or that Jeremy Sumpter looks younger than 13 in Peter Pan.
This is why I gave up on wanting to be Lyra, 13 is a tad too old :crying:
:wassat:i wonder when the movie will come out probably not for a logn time……
that would be my dream come true to be lya 🙂 but i will not get it because i don't have an agent and they would probably kick me out if i did try :laughing:hah! I'll stick to my school plays for now
Well, i'm SICK of school plays!!! i wanna try something new and HUGE! But dammit, i need an agent! and no, Ian, not you. a professional. HOW DO I GET ONE???
Sam, you shouldn't be so negative. if you hammer negative stuff into your head all the time and say "oooh, i'll never get in, they don't want me," chances are that'll happen. You mind makes your reality. think positive! it's really corny, but it seriously works!

The CAA mean big business…
How about this then?

Got anything for Australian people, Kinders?
You seem very good at finding things…
perhaps, you could be my agent? 😉
Just whack in Australia Talent Agency in Google, you'll be overwhelmed.
Wow. You've done your homework, haven't you, Kinders?
