whoah... those earrings on Faa have got to go..... kekekeke
anyway... looks almost super cheesy.... almost.. Narnia cheesy
please dont let that happen please dont let that happen please dont let that happen
Kate: on 01/04/2007
nah, it's just the landscape and costuming that look Narnia...it would take a whole lot of screwing up to make the film have that feel.
Vaka: on 01/05/2007
Yeah, the costumes seem like they belong in a really over the top made-for-TV movie, or something. (Could this be them looking at Iorek for the first time?)
me: on 01/05/2007
Dude, Ma Costa doesn't go North....but it's okay cause she rocks.
bc90: on 01/05/2007
ma costa looks exactly how i imagined her to be but lord faa is not powerrful-looking enough. the guy in the green hat in the background looks like bill paxton lol
Kyrillion: on 01/05/2007
Hey! Ma Costa ain't meant to be there. But I don't mind that plot change...
Annabel: on 01/05/2007
They probably added Ma Costa up north to make things easier with the plot. Because in the book Lord Faa says initially that no women are coming, and lyra appeals to him, and is bored for a few weeks before he says she can eventually. They wouldn't want to put the few weeks where she isn't really doing anything in the film, it would take up too much time, so it makes sense for Lord Faa to be like"Yes, we will take a few women, as your alethiometer skills are required, Lyra".
Ma costa is exactly right. The actress is scarily like how I imagined her.
: on 01/05/2007
I suspect that another reason for Ma Costa's appearance up North may be something to do with the abilities of the actress who is playing her. While not hugely famous she is a very well respected and hugely capable actress so it may have been seen as a bit of a waste to only use her in a few scenes at the start of the movie and then never again?
careforcheeseandcrackers?: on 01/06/2007
i agree with lee scoresbery it does look really cheesy in this shot but the other ones dont (except maybe the one where lyra is walking with tony or roger) but the other photos look really good
randomperson: on 01/06/2007
oh god. I might as well die. John Faa looks like he's half pirate, half somthing else. Not like a gyptian.
*confused* And aren't they supposed to be wearing furs, if their up north????

Lyra at heart age 13: on 01/13/2007
The reason Ma Costa is there is to give the actress playing her (Claire Higgens?) a bigger part. Otherwise she would only have been in the film for 5 minutes or so. I like the change anyway, gives more female power.
Missy-Me: on 01/13/2007
Yeh I agree with drama queen i imagened him too as a sort of pirate. Lyra looks great in this one too.
Naffy: on 01/13/2007

Lorna: on 01/14/2007
maybe they thought that the general public would scandalized if a little girl went on a long trip with a bunch of lonely men. That is gross, i know.
And speaking of people who have no idea what they are doing.. has anyone seen that amatuer trailer made by GreenSky or something? They pronounced her name Leera and it just happens to be Lie-rha. i can deal with most oversights but that- that was just stupid.

Lyra at heart age 13: on 01/15/2007
Yeah Iv'e seen that Lorna! I thought it was actually very good for an amateur production, but it just ruined it that the people playing the parts were American it ruined the feel and made it a bit cheesy. Did you notice they also pronounced Daemon as Day-mon?
Lorna: on 01/15/2007
yeh, i did notice that. That was so dumb.
I am American too, but I was just like.. no.. no.. just stop.. your horrible.

Lyra at heart age 13: on 01/16/2007

Lori: on 01/30/2007
Lyra's wearing girly clothes because Mrs. Coulter picked them out. She grabbed them on the way out of the house the night of the party.
crazy_stunt_girl: on 02/01/2007
Actually, when Lyra is in the North she goes "shopping" with Farder Coram for new furs in Trollesund while they are waiting to get under way. These clothes are really not suitable for northern living; trust me, I grew up north of 60 ;). One of the reasons I love this book so much is the phenomenon with the Aurora Borealis that Pullman creates; the Norhthern Lights are so beautiful, I really can't wait to see how they portray them on film! But to get myself back on topic, these "cosutmes" are flimsy at best; Lyra is supposed to be wearing reindeer hide with wolverine fur around the hood to insulate... honestly, when you're about to embark into the wilderness you don't care a damn about fashion. But that's Hollywood, what else can you say?!

Thor: on 03/06/2007
Of course it'll win awards- the film will be phenominal--- for those people who havent read the book and dont feel like shredding dakotas dressing gown into a million pieces--- it'll be quite a good film- not the book personified- but some sort of midpoint.
xVEEx: on 03/07/2007
i totally agree with thor. Great books are always ruined by good movies. i always imagines Faa tall, and smaller around the middle. very muscular though
Witch_Queen: on 03/10/2007
Wow! these people are great for Gyptians, you could say I am a gyptian myself because I live on a Narrow boat and travel around, and some people who live on barges do dress like this.
Lyra at heart age 13: on 03/11/2007
Wow Witch_Queen! Maybe your name should be Gyptian_Queen instead! I wish I lived on a barge. I love traveling around!!

Thanks Lyra at heart age 13! Great idea about my name, maybe i should change it! Yeah, life on a barge is great!
dsaa: on 03/12/2007
i played a gyptian in a stage production for this, and that is basically exactly how i imagines the gyptians. though i must say that lyra is a bit young, it makes the thing look like a little innocent film where it should be dark and exciting, not another stupid movie for kids. lyra shud be older.
khila: on 03/13/2007
I wanna toss Dakota's girly costume in the trash and make up a new one.
crawly: on 03/14/2007

Lyra is too pale!! She's freezing, probably!!
Thor: on 03/17/2007
Khila- you read my mind. The other gyptians look good- ma costa looks best although I'm not quite sure why she is there- didn't the male gyptians go alone with one female-Lyra. Dakota looks sort of awkward in this scene.
Anna: on 03/20/2007
lord faa is a bit camp looking, i thouhgt he was meant to be manly and powerful, not look like a dragg queen.
Anna: on 03/20/2007
i also agree with Thor, Lyra was the only female there.
Lyra at heart age 13: on 03/24/2007
True there wasn't any other females besides Lyra, but I think this is a change for the better as some people who havn't read the books and see the film could either see this as sexism or something pervy... you know, all men, one small girl...
Gyptian_Queen: on 03/24/2007
Good point.
Thor: on 03/25/2007
Still, they're distorting the story, because the whole proving to Coram and Faa thing won't happen so Benjamin will either be cut or given a made up explanation. Not good.

(About Witch_Queen's comment)
They're skipping The Horse and His Boy?! That may have been my favorite book of the series!
Ama: on 06/27/2007
I guess it makes sense if they want to stick to the story of Peter, Susan, and Lucy. Although they /did/ appear in The Horse and His Boy except as adults within the Narnia world. Speaking of, it seems kind of weird to discuss the Narnia books in an HDM forum. What with Philip Pullman really not liking the Chronicles of Narnia.
Witch_Queen: on 08/20/2007
NO! Narnia is NOT chessy! Well I wasnt too fond of The horse and his boy, but I think they should stay true to the series. Pullman doesnt like Narnia?! You'd think it would be his inspiration or something.
Ama: on 08/23/2007
No way he really dislikes it. And he says C. S. Lewis is sexist. Also the fact that the books are very religious, and Pullman is sort of against that... in a sense...
Witch_Queen: on 08/24/2007
How is C.S Lewis sexist? I get the religious bit, but Northern lights is pretty religious what with the Magisterium and the Authority and all that...
belaqua-silvertongue: on 09/02/2007
yeah but its against the church witch_queen. and i think i no wat she means bout sexist but the narnia series is set a long time ago so @ that time practically evry1 was sexist
Witch_Queen: on 09/03/2007
I know its against the church but there is still the religious aspect to it with the Witches prophecy and all that...
Ama: on 09/03/2007
There's a little bit of a sexist undertone in the books... Mostly in the traditional, old-fashioned type way. C. S. Lewis seemed like the conservative type.
Ama: on 09/08/2007
I don't think it was a rumor, he was talking about in the books. I don't think Philip Pullman would do that.
Ama: on 09/10/2007
Oh no! Being sexist is when you discriminate someone because of their sex/gender. In this case, against girls.
