How exactly did he come up with this? I know what he said about his Mom but if that was true wouldnt we all be lifeless shells? This has been confusing me a lot.

I still find it amazing that people can spell 'spectres' incorrectly even though it's, like, written 500 times in HDM.

And also, a lot of people are lifeless shells.

And also, Will is in a book.

Well, grammar lessons aside, I think that Will is trying to justify his mother's delusions. She is probably acting a bit crazy because she is a bit crazy. There are most likely no *spectres* in our world, and if there are, very few.

Perhaps the spectres only attack university professors or high school teachers. I'd say MPs might be regular victims as well. Of course, don't forget middle managers in big firms. All these people appear like 93.8% to 98.7% of their personality was sucked out.

I wasn't criticising your spelling surge. And it's not spelt spectres in all versions. It's spelt specters in my U.S.A edition.

Anyways, back to the topic of the thread....

I remember he mentioned the homeless woman he saw pushing her shopping cart around, I thought that was a bit odd but I see what he might mean, how so many people pretend to not see the homeless, turning a blind eye. Maybe the idea of the spectres are in our world, just in a diffrent form, sucking the life out of people little by little, i can totally see that with government propaganda.

That's a philosophical musing stargirl :) I don't think soul-sucking Dementor types physically exist in our world.

How utterly depressing that spectre became that 'thing' in the US versions. It's like changing 'mum' to 'mom' and Philosopher to Sorcerer from Harry Potter. It's enough to make me cry that Americans can't cope with British spelling. :(

Would you like a hanky? Yes, we're very stupid in America. We walk around bouncing off walls, misspelling words and wishing we had never won our independence. How I would still love to be a British subject.

And the only great writers America ever produced - Henry James, T S Eliot, Sylvia Plath - all ended their lives as Brits anyway

(Apart from Raymond Chandler who was really a Brit in the first place)

What was that? They ended their lives as they had become Brits? That's probably true. I heard that Sylvia Plath expressly stated so in her suicide note

And you're welcome to claim Raymond Chandler :)
