The Republic of Heaven

What happened to other knife bearers?

Discuss the second book of the trilogy

What happened to other knife bearers?

Postby Ian » Mon Mar 28, 2005 8:39 pm

If the bleeding on the stumps of Will's fingers (as a result of his fight for the knife) only stopped when he was given bloodmoss, and all Giacomo Paradisi could offer was antiseptic, how did all the other knife bearers stop the bleeding? Did they all drop dead after a week from blood loss, or did they too find someone who healed the wound?

Maybe some of them had blood moss. Or maybe they weren't as preoccupied as Will and could get to a hospital.

The other knife bearers were all Cittagazze natives I think, so I'd imagine they'd be more experienced with dealing with the bleeding. They would have probably had a standard solution that worked, before their civilisation’s infrastructure fell apart.

Something a bit like the 'Help! - My fingers have just been cut off by an evil knife! Intensive care unit'?

Here's a thought. Couldn't you just cut off your fingers even more, but with a normal knife, so the wound would also be a normal one?

I can’t imagine that being the first thing to pop into your head
Lyra: Will, look at you fingers (or lack there of)
Will: never mind, I’ll just cut them off a bit more and were sorted

The witches tried their spells and stuff, and none of it worked. Why didn't they just give him stitches?

Can you stitch a wound like that closed?

I'm not sure, but drawing on experience from other books, I would say (silly of me to ask really :D ) that stitches were not an option. Don't know if you remember in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Mr Weasley is bitten by a poisonous snake, they try to stitch the wound, and it all goes horribly wrong. Would still be interested to hear what others have to say though:

even if there wasn't a hospital around, there is still a very simple solution to the matter. I would just heat up a peace of metal, and burn the wound shut. However painful it would be, it would work.

perhaps it just stops eventually? Will's fingers weren't bleeding at the end but then I haven't read TAS in ages so maybe he got it healed and I can't remember?

Jopari did some magic on it.
but jopari was gone by the time then went into Marzipan and they were bleeding then, or at least before they went to the Muelfa.

The bloodmoss ointment he invented did it. Definitely.
