They are very complex though....might make one a little dizzy (but anyone who can read his dark materials should have no problem)

Ive tried to start a thread about it too. Great books but I think there is so much to discuss that people dont want to start. Those books rock. I love the complexity of them but at the same time i get really annoyed. I mean, of the main characters, the patriarch is dead, his son is dead, his wife is dead. Alive, but not functioning other than to point. My favorite storylines are Jon and Dany (The two that are payed the least attention in A Feast for Crows. )
Have you read The Wheel of Time? I read ASoIaF after coming of eight thousan pages of no WoT. No main characters dying and perhaps one obscenity per five hundred pages. Martin really jumps right into his stories.
Whats your favorite of the set so far? I think i liked A Game of Thrones the most, the others killed off to many people or depressed me. Or both.

I too have kept up with this series since it was first introduced - even buy the hardbacks since I can't wait for the paperback versions.

These books certainly aren't for everyone - let's face it, there are so many characters that it's enormously challenging to try and keep up with who's who, where they're from, what their allegience is, and at times whether or not they're even alive anymore. I found the second book (I think it was the second book, anyway - it's been awhile since I've read them) hard to get through. And the last book, while I liked it better than the one before - well, it just gets tiring reading of someone being killed every second or third page. Still, the overall story keeps me pulled in and I'm looking forward to the next one.

I will say this, though: the next book needs to pick up the pace and get to what's really behind that wall and back to the dragons.

My favorite would have to be either a Clash of Kings or a Storm of Swords. A Game of Thrones was good, but it was essentailly the set up for the rest of the series. I like WOT as well, even though it can never be as great as ASOIAF, and considering the news about RJ's health, its iffy if the series will be finished

Has anyone else had a chance to read any of the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series by George R.R. Martin?

He is known as the "American Tolkein", whatever that means, and is often credited with defining modern fantasy novels. The series is planned to be 7 books long, and 4 have been completed. They are pretty lengthy novels, hovering between 800 and 1300 pages each, but IMO surpass even Lord of the Rings in many aspects.

I haven't finished it yet, but I'm in the middle of the first book of the series. They are HUGE novels, but they're worth getting through, in my opinion. Book one is great so far.

I just started the first book as well, and it's very good so far. It was a bit shocking to read about all of the incestuous relationships, but I think I'll get over it. No spoilers, please!

I've read the first 4 books... book 5 has been delayed several times now. I can't wait for it to come out.

Additionally, HBO has been contracted to create a TV series based on the books. They are going to dedicate 1 season to each book, which (I think) will allow for them to really cover everything in the books (which is A LOT). HBO generally does well with their shows, so I'm excited about that too. I think it will work out better than a movie adaptation unless there were 20 movies or so, which would prove too expensive and would probably change directors and cast several times throughout.

I liked that it wasn't obvious who we were supposed to like. Catelyn, for instance, was a huge bitch to Jon, but turns out OK. I also wasn't a huge fan of Daenerys' sections, and I'm not sure how I feel about her as a person (and her breastfeeding some baby dragons was kind of ridiculous...) I was really glad that Viserys got his ~*pineapples*~ ruined, but after he died I was much less sympathetic towards Daenerys. And killing off Ned; not acceptable!

I'm currently on the third book A Storm of Swords. These books put all other high fantasy books to shame. The Wheel of Time series is ~*pineapples*~ compared to this series.
