TBOD: What is needed for The BOD?

Postby Starshade » Fri Apr 30, 2004 8:48 am

What do you want really that would be interesting to read about in the BOD?

Well for me, I'd like to read into the past of the minor / main characters, like Lee, Iorek, Iofur, Serafina, Farder Coram, Asriel and Coulter etc.

I'd also like to know how the Church grew so much power.

I just want to see a deeper and more detailed exploration of Lyra's world and the characters in it, hopefully with really good illustrations here and there. I'm not dying to hear more about Will and Lyra, although that would be nice. what I want to hear more about is panserbjorne!

Edit: now that I think about it, it would be really cool if PP just wrote a huge book about panserbjorne, although sadly I think this will never happen...

More Gyptians!!

Coram/Pekkala

How the Papacy was abolished/the move to Geneva/Calvin

I read somewhere that PP has an aversion to including too much detail, preferring to concentrate on good story telling (something that he's good at)

But, Like Brutillus, I'm hoping for a few gaps to be filled in.

I just want something that involves war, there wasn't enough detail in the war in TAS.

TAS wasn't a war book - surely there are lots and lots of war books out there with more than enough detail of war for one lifetime? Also I believe PP is a pacifist and not much interested in writing about war - such war scenes as there are in TAS have that look of being put in at the insistence of editors. IMHO the short and inglorious coflicts in NL work much better.

I'm currently rereading Reg Hill's The Wood beyond (just ignore what it says in my sig). It's a contemporary crime novel but underlying it is a sub-plot from WW1 - Passchendaele in particular . It's pretty harrowing and would soon put you off any idea that there was anything glorious about war.

I want to read more about the Torre de Angelli and how the subtle knife was invented.
Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world's great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of the rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs.

I am haunted by waters.

i would love to see more on daemons and how they are "born"
Into this wild abyss, The womb of nature and perhaps her grave, of neither sea, nor shore, nor air, nor fire, But all these in their pregnant causes mixed Confusedly, and which thus must ever fight, Unless the almighty maker them ordain His dark materials to create more worlds, Into this wild abyss the wary fiend Stood on the brink of hell and looked a while, Pondering his voyage...John Milton-Paradise Lost-Book 2

I think that subject has been talked to death around here.
All the dæmon gynaecology and all that, but a small explanation from Pullman would give some grounding.

I'd like to see how daemons came into Lyra's World, like how the mulefa found the pod seeds, it'd be nice to see where daemons came from.

I want to read the book and be surprised and inspired. That would be a true PP really. To much talk has gone on about dæmon birth that I am sick of saying it. Tis true that I would also like more stories about minor characters but I would still prefer a nice surprise in the book.

now this is a surprise: i want to know more about the end of the authority's true reign, how metatron took over - did he trick the authority into trusting him, or did his regency corrupt him? are we to assume the story of lucifer was completely separate from metatron, or were they one and the same? (think that it would be possible)

more on the creation of the knife would be fascinating, but i'm more interested in why they did it. what did they use it for? was the intention of it to cut through worlds or simply to be able to destroy anything? they did call it æsahættr (spelling unsure), but was that because they intended the knife to destroy the authority, or because they knew it was capable once they saw what else it could do?

lots of questions there. i do hope the above forgive me for resurrecting this thread.
