i'm a bit late, but i thought i should point out that the purpose of learning japanese in communities where japanese isn't useful is to get out of your community...

Yes that's very true, and I was planning on taking japanese, but then for some reason (I don't even remember why) I decided to take french instead. Which is also extremely unuseful here. But I definetly am not planning on spending my whole life here.

I know PP wrote poetry before he wrote novels - nothing published, as far as I know, but he mentioned learning the discipline of sonnet-writing and so forth had given him a good ear for the rhythm of a sentence when writing fiction.
