oh brill! i luv the way u shaded in the shadows- makes him look really mysterious, ragged and lost in thought. Looks quite studious! Or studious is the wrong word...powerful and authoritive planning/mysterious unknown intentions would be better. Again u seem to have the nack of capturing characters feelings and the sense of who they are-i could instantly recongnise this without the label as Lord Asriel! i like the way u put his eyes in pools of darkness so u can't tell what he's thinking! The shape and shading on his body are so accurate and yet sketchy and detailed! The hint of toned muscles are given so subtlely and the way he's resting handsomely on his chair is just so with the character. He really does look like a wild, tough beast barely contained in a domestic environment(not to mention in need of a shave!) Looks well traveled like he ought 2 be and Stelmaria is so sleek and powerful ans shares his concentrated absorbation. The hints of spots r just right-though i didn't find it hard to distingwish *groan-spelling*her from an ordinary leopard.

Thanks Lizzie. Like your critique again! Very informative and detailed you'd do well on my History of Art course as this is mostly what we do! I found that being able to criticise other people's work makes my own better. You can take inspiration from knowing what others were thinking when they painted what we now consider masterpieces. For example after the success of using a Michelangelo figure for Metatron I used another for this. It's the statue of Lorenzo di'Medici in the Medici Chapel, if you look at it you'll see I copied the pose again! Lol. As you can tell, Michelangelo is my favourite artist :) I was quite pleased with this sketch though. He kind of looks like Michelangelo, the pose is known in art terms as the 'melancholic genius' look. Hand touching head deep in thought. That's how I saw Asriel so I am glad that is how it has come across to you. He is so wrapped up in his thoughts on building his republic etc. that he isn't taking care of his appearance. Sometimes I am a bit like that. Asriel as my favourite character in the trilogy for this reason. Will do another tomorrow. Thinking of Mrs Coulter :)

Sorry just noticed how long and boring what I just wrote was ...Lol. But when I see people's pictures I like to know what was going on in their head when they were doing it. P.S. I tried to make Stelmaria very sleek and beautiful as she is the feminine part of Asriel who I think ought to be quite good-looking... well I'm too old to fancy Will...Lol

There is certainly no deniying your talent. However, I don't really fancy this one as much as your others...I think Stelly's anatomy is a bit of, with the structure of her head and all. Also, lord Asriel looks too...bohemian, I think is the right word, with the unbuttoned shirt and laid back smock. You did capture his wild side- the bird's nest hair and animal grace. Your shading skills, however, are top notch-especially the photorealistic chair. i would love to see a still life from you-ooh, could you do the alethiometer? You'd be just the one...anyway, you should be very proud of yourself, this is a real piece of art.

Lol. Thanks Silversong. I love your Asriel. He is very sleek 1950's style. I did think mine was a bit bohemian but I guess that it isn't how most people see him. As I said above I see Asriel as a bit of a philosopher and the greatest philosophers are very wrapped up in what they are thinking and don't really take much notice of the physical world hence th fact I have made Asriel look a little 'dirty' and he has a fixed kind of gaze that isn't looking at anything whilst stroking Stelmaria. Thanks for your commetns about Stelmarias head. I think you are right although the photograph came out a little bit worse than the picture actually is. I have added to the picture since then too and made it a bit better (having actually looked at a picture of a snow leopard lol). As for still life, I haven't drawn a still life in a while but maybe I'll give it a go tomorrow with the next character :)
Lizzietiffon01: on 08/29/2006
yeah-you really should do still life, even if you're brill at the capturing-emotions-and-characters-and-motion part of art. Don't worry bout long and dreary comments-they add to the quality of your actual drawing coz they show wot u were trying to achieve;plus showing u know Asriels character intimately enough to draw him this well.

I especially like the way Stalmaria is staring longingly at Asriel's crotch. A very cunning way of portraying his narcisistic nature. Cunning. I think this brings us to the much contemplated but rarely voiced question: What do daemons do when their people have sex? 'Cause, I mean, a golden monkey and a snow leopard doing it... that's pretty kinky.
Charlotte: on 09/02/2006
Love it! I won't pretend that I intended it to have that effect but a good point! I also wondered about the sex thing. When they were kissing the monkey and the snow leopard were grabbing each other weren't they? Hmm. Good question. Guess they just kind of roll around with each other or maybe just watch! I don't think I like the idea of that...Lol

really good i like your drawings a lot i just kinda pictured his hair a little different everything else is great

This is actually Lord Asriel as I see him. Everyone elses' takes seemed to be a polished society man, but you've got the 'melancholic genius' bit down, not to mention the rough sexuality and careless explorer. Best Asriel here. As I'm sure you know, your leopard frame is skewed; the spinal cord, haunches, head etc...

BEST! Rugged yet stylish.

AFRO!
Stlemaria's face is wiggedy wack, but her body's great.

Stelmaria looks so pretty and elegant! I love it! It's not how I pictured Asrial, but I love seeing others interpretations, and the picture is fantastic! Great job!
HelenaHermione: on 03/26/2007
Ah, Asriel in a pondering state, fresh from adventure still, but taking a quiet, somber moment to consider his next move as Stelmaria tries to comfort him
