Anniversary edition info
Had a look at the notes at the back of the new editions in Waterstones before work yesterday (and incidentilly, is there an equivilant of these copies in the USA?) and thought there was plenty of interesting stuff, setting up TBoD in much the way LO does, especially Mary Malone's stuff in TAS.
LA's notes seem to have fallen into the hands of the Church which appears to be regrouping and unifying. Lots of lovely sketches (this is just the sort of thing I hoped for in TBoD itself, as well as stories).
But my favourite bit is in John Parry's notes in TSK, in his first impressions of Lord Asriel. It says something like,
'He has a daughter of whom he is immensely proud. He showed me a photogram.'

Trust me, if it was TBoD you would have heard about it.

I think maybe you’re over estimating Pullman's decision making power in these matters, if the publishers of HDM think they make money by releasing multiple copies of the same trilogy they will.Pullman's not the sort of person to force people to buy another copy of the book, just for a few little scraps here and there.
It’s all part of the what happens when make a deal with book publishers, and don’t forget when the movies come out we’ll be seeing another wave of new HDM editions, it’s already happening with the Narnia books

Isn't that allowed to happen with narnia because the author has been dead for 50 years?

But Pullman would have to actually write the new stuff for these special editions. I think it would be completely down to him on where they appeared.I think maybe you’re over estimating Pullman's decision making power in these matters, if the publishers of HDM think they make money by releasing multiple copies of the same trilogy they will.Pullman's not the sort of person to force people to buy another copy of the book, just for a few little scraps here and there.

What those books really represent is the publication worlds equivalent to special edition DVDs, you bought the original a few years ago and now they have a new edition out with extra content and like most special edition DVDs (mainly fantasy/sci-fi) they’re aimed at the kind of individual that would buy multiple copy’s of the same thing. But Pullman would have to actually write the new stuff for these special editions. I think it would be completely down to him on where they appeared.
Just because an author is dead doesn’t mean there isn’t an estate that looks after his interests after he’s gone.Isn't that allowed to happen with narnia because the author has been dead for 50 years?

I don't know if they're available in the USA, but in the UK the covers are nearly the same, just rejigged slightly. Actually, I prefer the old versions. When I next go into a bookshop, I'll definitely look out for the extra notes, but I won't be wasting my money buying extra copies of the same book.

Same here but there is genuinely interesting stuff I would love to have for reference. Another interesting bit is Parry's map of witch territories and a bit more about their politics.

what exactly does the cover look like? what's different about it compared to the original american versions?I'm in the U.S. and I bought it! I love all the little drawings. . . maybe I'll do some replicas hehehe. . .
What sold me was the alethiometer on the cover.
