Windows and daemon separation

Postby Melancholy Man » Tue Nov 23, 2004 7:11 am

Re-reading TSK, I was struck how bird-Pan flew through a window and back again to Lyra.

How the ferkin' 'eck is this possible? He may have been an arm length from Lyra, but he'd been translated to another world. As I remember, the separation rite with witch daemons involved passing across a similar void.

You see what they did here, right, was get this big shedload of mirrors and one of them smoke projector-type machinations set up just outside the window and...

It's never specified what the witch rite specifically involved. Also, this would mean that whenever Lyra went through a world, she and Pan would have to go through at exactly the same time. The only time I really considered this to be a problem would have been that the bond could have been severed by the edge.

I suppose if the window had then been closed, then they would have been separated. The window stayed open, though, which meant the bond could remain intact.

We need Raeth to draw a picture..
It depends on the nature of the (physical) energy bond between daemon and owner. If it's all elastic-like, it could go through a window and er, bend around the edge. If it's fairly straight, once the daemon moved too far to the side, or round the back of the window, it'd be chopped.

There was a non-specific reference to the witch having to pass across a wasteland, which I took to be the related to the Styx.

We need Gabe now, but I don't see corresponding points on either side of a Window as being the same in space and time. If it were, daemon separation wouldn't be an issue. They are, instead, both infinitely close and infinitely far - this should create as many problems with the human/daemon bond as with dividing a real number by zero.

It is a little strange,

But Lyra also had witch blood somewhere down the lines, so maybe they were able to move further apart than most people. :?

Nah blood would not affect how the laws of physics apply to one.

Hmmm this is a bit of a conundrum...

Wasn't there a line in NL about all the worlds being a shadow's thickness away from each other, but inpercievible?

That implie, in my mind, that each point in the *same* world are infinitely small distances from all other points. Therefore, there'd be no problem with daemons straying too far from their humans.

Distance could only be infinitely small between worlds, rather than in a single world. There isn't gravity in space. And passing through Windows ought to kill someone in a dozen ways (unfamiliar germs, slightly different laws of physics and atomic energy levels etc) which I suppose mut be guarded against.

wonder what would happen if a daemon crossed a window and they closed it with each(daemon and owner)on diff sides. i would imagin that they would become seperated like the guilitine
Into this wild abyss, The womb of nature and perhaps her grave, of neither sea, nor shore, nor air, nor fire, But all these in their pregnant causes mixed Confusedly, and which thus must ever fight, Unless the almighty maker them ordain His dark materials to create more worlds, Into this wild abyss the wary fiend Stood on the brink of hell and looked a while, Pondering his voyage...John Milton-Paradise Lost-Book 2

Interesting prose, though I think that they would die.

I thought of that before, but I'm sure it's like Naomi said, that the owner and daemon would just die automatically, either from shock or the 'connection' fizzling out.
