I assumed the daemon parents might choose.
Now there's an idea. The daemon parents choosing the name for the daemon, and the parents choosing the name for the child. Hmmmm
I hope we find out in TBOD

Yeah.. That's a way it could work... hmmm.
I like the thought of my dæmon, whatever animal it may be, to be able to curl up around my neck, like Pan does. I like to have something soft around my neck when I am to sleep. If not I feel so exposed...

Well after all, we'll lie another day
And through it all, we'll find some other way
And through it all, we'll find some other way

I'd want one.
I think that is what I would want as well. Or I would want a dragon but I haven't found out if you can have a dragon as a daemon.

There is a part in Northern Lights, during the scene where Ma Costa is looking for Billy, and the kids are about to fight and all their daemons become vicious animals, but Pantalaimon becomes a miniature dragon.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

No, you are right. I remember that myself but I don't know if you can have a permanent dragon daemon. And I wouldn't want it miniature I would want it big.

It would to my dragon.
Yes, I suppose it would... How big do you think daemons could get? Also how small could a daemon be? Could you have like a sea monkey or something even smaller as your daemon?

I also wondered about the gender of a daemon.
They mention that servant in the kitchen's at Jordan (who was a spy for John Faa) who was one of those rare people to have a daemon the same sex as them.
Does that imply homosexuality or something?

covered all over the place on this board.
Pullman has said on the matter words to the effect of "it could mean any number of things, perhaps homosexuality" and that he doesn't know everything about the worlds he creates. Which he shouldn't. Some members of this board have speculated it makes him more a man for having two male parts of his soul (think it was Will who said something about being a real man's man

If you want to know what makes me sad
Well it's hope, the endurance of faith
A battle that lasts a lifetime
A fight that never ends
Walking in the countryside
It seems that the winds have stopped
Tell my mother I am sorry
And I loved her

Not many manly men would be a pastry cook.

I don't think it means they're gay.
I'm generalising here, I know, but most gay men are more feminine than *ahem* normal men, not more masculine. The daemon is supposed to show a part of yourself, so a gay man, or woman, would have an animal more like the opposite sex.
It makes sense in my head anyway

Actually, I think it would make sense for homosexual men to have same-sex daemons. Since no part of them is female, it means that they can't really relate romantically to women, so they are attracted to men instead. The sex of the daemon could represent the sex the person is attracted to.

That's exactly why I don't think same-sex daemons means homosexuality.
daemons aren't what you're attracted to, they're what you are!
Every woman has a masculine aspect to her and every man has a feminine aspect to him, the daemons represent that partly.
And, just to throw another argument in. If gay people have same-sex daemons and straight people have opposite-sex daemons, what do bisexuals have? Hmmmm?
