If I was Philip Pullman I'd buy me a racing car and zoom up and down the M1 in it.

Occasionally I would also find time for my passion, writing, but mostly it would be

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM for me :P

well, he said he's not that rich yet, just wealthy enough to not have to worry about money and picking up a book whenever it looks interesting.

I should think he's already been paid for the rights. Though he might get a royalty for showings as well.

Being a canny sort of man I would imagine that he's negotiated a healthy deal for the film rights. Which will amount to far more than he'll get for the books.
