I liked these books almost as much as HDM
But it was so sad when Fred died...except for that I liked the third one the best...and i felt guilty because I liked Dan Goldberg more than fred...but I also worked out who it was before the end as well. It's amazing how different the two series were - just shows how great PP is as an author - versatility!!!
but i didn't like the Tin princess nearly so much.
and most of my friends, who I leant HDM to, and then Sally Lockhart, didn't like Sally Lockhart at all!!!
strange ppl

I haven't read the Tin Princess, but I thought I might like it, cause I liked that kid (Adelle? something like that) from The Ruby in The Smoke.

Go Dan!!!!!!!!!
NOt true...Fred was cool, but I had to pretend he didn't exist to be happy in the next book.... I'm so pathetic, but I belief in true love...and how can it exist twice? (ie sally and fred, then sally and dan)

I can't say I've read any Big Phil work except HDM which is my favourite book in all the cosmos.

Sympathy
As one who is/was in the same situation for the past four years, I sympathise.
Life should mirror 'the world between the pages', it's much more logical there!
(and I agree with you...HDM forever: my favourite book/series since 1997!)

I had to keep blocking Fred out during TIW. Terribly sad about his death. I read his death during a school concert (not good) and named my flute Frederick Garland in honor of Fred.
Fred/Dan...Well Dan is definitely more awesome (his speech when they were going to attack the Jewish baker's building, to die for!), but I love Fred more. Fred just was with Sally more and they had the 2 book build up to their love. Which one is better? I have no idea.

Fred was a first love, which was nice. Dan was far more interesting. Dan it is.

that speech!
I just reread the whole series a few days ago (when I should have been studying for uni exams, of course!) and was reminded of the awesomeness of that speech Dan made at the bakers to stop the mob attacking the Jewish houses. For that, I'd have to make it Dan. It's just brilliant!!!! Sums up my political views perfectly.
But Fred's so cool.... Oh, how do you decide????

I think The Tiger... is my favourite Sally Lockhart.
And I always like a love story where the falling for the romantic lead goes hand in hand with a shift in personal philosophy.
