With the Cave, (computer) how could it read your mind...?

It's not the Cave itself. Dust can "read" your mind (well, Dust pretty much is your mind), and it controls what the Cave displays.

the cave was also connected to a brainwave-reading device -- hence the electrodes.

the cave is probably designed to read brain activity (think like a cat scan?) brain activity is basically conciousness, aside from regulating bodily functions. conciousness attracts dust. there you go.

Ooooooooooh... I'm gonna have to try that, Witch-girl. :shock:

Ahem. I will attempt my answer to the proposed question as an SAT analogy:
Mary:the Cave::Lyra:the alethiometer
(Anyone who has had the unfortunate circumstance knows how to read that, but for everyone else: Mary is to the Cave as Lyra is to the alethiometer.)
It says at some point during that scene that the same beings putting letters on the screens move the dials on the alethiometer. And the alethiometer knows everything because Dust knows everything, because Dust is consciousness. So if the Dust knows everything, then it must know what's in your mind.

Okay...humans are much too obsessed with the non-existant occult.

It is true that we humans are fascinated by the unusual the impossible and the damn right strange. It's called curiosity.

Yeah probably is. Yet I don't really want to try it as I might come into contact with an inner daemon.

Sorry to get kinda back on topic, but I like how Mary had to get a spiffy computer, and how valuable an Alethiometer is, when Mary could later just use some sticks and an old chinese book :)

I am also quite confused as, if I remember correctly, the words on Mary's screen said that they were Angels. But the Angels we later see simply talk like everybody else. Confuscating.

Haha yeah, I thought of that too.

They may be a higher level of angels, like higher than Xaphania or something. Or, they may have just said they were angels to help Mary understand them better.

on the official sites for the books(i think) it said that specters were corrupted angels, could that mean maybe that whenever the knife cuts through a world it corrupts some Dust, turning it into a specter? probly not but it does bring a whole new level of connections and relations into the story.

You could say that Specters corrupt Dust by consuming it....
