Dæmons

Well, I haven't started a thread yet and decided what the heck.
This thread is for anything and everything about dæmons.
I had a question, actually. Is the settling of one's dæmon sudden, or is it gradual? I know in the case of Lyra and Will it was quick, but those were extraordinary circumstances. What does it feel like? These are just questions to get the thread moving.
Does anyone know?

Well, I'll try to answer most of your questions. daemons in my opinion set suddenly, at your adult age. Well nobody knows what does it feel like, and the reason is obvious.

(no offence)

yah, i doubt anyone knows what it feels like around here. but it's probably something like suddenly realising you're going through puberty and the shock that your daemon will no longer be able to change.
i think one of the girls in the world of the dead told lyra, when asked if her daemon had yet changed, that her daemon was changing less and less...

The sailor on the boat to the north in NL said that you get to a point where you don't really want your daemon to change, but prefer to have the permenancy of a fixed form.

OK, what else? Any questions about dæmons, or anything like that? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller? (Anyone who's seen Ferris Bueller's Day Off knows what I'm talking about

I think it happens over a long period of time. Yep. **nods**

Yeah, it happens gradually; wei hadn't realized Celierra had settled (symbolically) until recently (though I can still "project" her as anything wei want).

Well, dæmons (this must be the only forum with lots of use of æ!) are externals souls aren't they. When you are a child you are uncertain of what you are going to be like, so your dæmon changes all the time. But then as you grow older you are influenced more and more by your surroundings and then your dæmon is fixed on what you are like.
Your dæmon probably becomes fixed in your sleep, just like wounds are healed in your sleeps, then (apart from extraordinary circumstances e.g Will and Lyra) you never know what it is like. But that's just my theory.
Does that make it a bit clearer?[/i]

In theory it's a very gradual process, but I think that the final push is often provided by some external event. I could tell when my Zahariel was starting to settle, but it wasn't until wei'd thought a lot about who wei really were that things finally "clicked" and she settled for good. I could somehow tell that this time it was the real thing, and she wouldn't just stay as an ocelot for a week or so and then change to something else. This suddenness could be because Zel had been "settling toward" a form that wei didn't know existed, so nothing else really fit before wei found out about it.

I don't really remember the details, but what about that daemon that fixed itself as some kind of fish (or maybe it was a whale), and the person couldn't really leave the sea? Or maybe it was the other way around, the person was a sailor but couldn't leave the land? I don't remember...
But I agree with the other stuff.

A man told Lyra about a sailor whose dmon had settled as a dolphin, I believe. Because of this he couldn't go far inland, if at all.

Ah, that was it
Hmmm. If you were never near the sea, like if you were always really far inland, would that completely rule out a sea daemon? Imagine living in the forest or something and waking up to find a large dolphin on the floor. Heh. So doesn't that mean you can sort of control what your daemon changes into?

Or maybe it won't settle until you get to the right place...

I'll have to agree with what Quazzerman wrote on this one... it sounds nice. Sensible, I mean.

Yes, but if you spent all your life away from the sea it would rule out the possibility of getting a fish or something like that.

Well, you wouldn't necessarily have to be near the sea, maybe a swimming pool or lake or something...

don't swimming pools kill fish?

Yeah, I guess, 'cause of the chlorine... But any pretty large source of fresh or salt water would work...
