Sam Elliott to play Lee Scoresby, says Pullman
Posted on by Merlyn

Sam Elliot, who will play Lee ScoresbyPhilip Pullman posted his October message today, saying: “The film of The Golden Compass is progressing very well. I spent yesterday at the studios in Shepperton, meeting some of the cast, including Sam Elliott, who's playing Lee Scoresby. Sam's resemblance to the Lee in my mind is just astonishing. His Lee has all the presence, the experience, the battered integrity, the humour, and the courage of the aeronaut who first walked into my story thirteen years ago. I can`t imagine a better cast, and the sets and costumes are just astounding.” Read more.

  1. Vaka says:

Wow…he seems like a good choice to me, even though I guess I imagined someone a little younger. I'm just excited that Pullman keeps saying such good things about the production.

  2. mysterygal says:

wow.thats not how i pictured him though,i picture him younger looking. :wassat:

  3. hoobits says:

    FINALLY!

I never thought of Elliot but dang! he is a great choice. Very close to my Lee (I pictured him with greying hair and a black mustache) but other than that he is certainly an actor of integrity that will bring the perfect balance as PP stated.

  4. Penguin_Factory says:

If that guy grows a moustache he'll look perfect for the part.

  5. hoobits says:

He usually has a mustache. On the IMDb page look at the pictures below his headshot.

  6. General Veers says:

People seem to have pictured him young, when many times he describes himself on the verge of retirement, like to Seraphina while flying to Svalbard, if I remember correctly. He looks the part, make no mistake. Lee has a young vide to its name, Scoresby is interestingly enough, a channel in Greenland.

  7. Adam says:

Now, that's some extremely good casting. A bit older than I would have imagined Lee Scoresby being, but he has the perfect "Texas Gentleman" look and accent. Lee's my favourite character in the trilogy, and I'm VERY pleased by this news.

  8. Witch-girl says:

Oh, I think that this dude would make a really perfect Lee Scoresby, but I'd really like it if they were to color his hair dark brown, instead of gray but otherwise keep him exactly the same…I just never would have imagined Lee with iron-gray hair, for some reason. :wassat: 🙂

  9. Adiam21 says:

Wow, how old is the man, hundred?? Nevertheless, it was written he wants to have woman and child?? The statement fits not necessarily to this age. Indeed, I also never could fancy Samuel Jackson, besides, however, now I would be really happy with him. I must say directly I have never fancied Lee,however, if I had to choose an actor it would be Bruce Campbell. So I do not have many figures in the book soon any more :crying:

  10. furbaby says:

Oh dear, Adiam21, it sounds as though you haven't understood the character of Lee Scoresby at all.

Sam Elliot will kick ass in the role, he is Lee to the life!

  11. Dave says:

Gah! His hair is the wrong colour! It should be green! 😉

In my opinion this is absolutely perfect casting.
And I wish people posting here would be a little more open minded in general and not obsess quite as much over every little detail. Remember that the picture you see in your mind of a given character is just that: YOUR vision. Not necessarily the correct one.

These movies, or any movie adapted from a book, simply can't 100% faithful. That would make for a terrible movie. What is the most important is to get the spirit of books right. Same goes for the characters. I have great hope for these movies.

Also, I have seen Dakota. People, don't worry, be happy. She's perfect.
But I'm sure some of you will think she's got the wrong hair colour.

  12. edd says:

    Is she ….. ginger?

  13. Dave says:

No no, I was being ironic. Stop the madness! 😉

Nope, she's not ginger. She's got blue hair. Why do you think her parents named her "Blue"? It looks a bit weird at first, but grows on you after a while.

And, again, I'm just joking. I'm a freaking comic genius. Or, you know, not.

Seriously though, it's more like light brown / dark blonde. Looks perfectly normal. You will also be shocked to know that she looks like a girl that's roughly 12 years old. Again, don't worry! She's great.

  14. Elanorielle says:

Dave, and where are the photos of Dakooooootaaaaaa? :wassat: 🙂

Elliot doesn't look like Lee. Pfffff… But he's not so awful, I must confess.

  15. Annabel says:

Yeah! Just how I imagined Lee, excatly. Only perhaps a little shorter and less grey. Fantastic 🙂

  16. Dave says:

Aww, Elanorielle… that would be taking all the fun out of waiting, wouldn't it?

They don't let just anyone take cameras onto the set I'm afraid. They're pretty strict about those things.

  17. Alewyn says:

Helloooooooo, PHILIP PULLMAN UPDATED PEOPLE, DOES ANYONE CARE ABOUT THAT???

"In short, I think it`s going to be – at the very least – spectacular." 🙂 🙂 🙂

He makes me so happy whenever he updates, plus my other favorite author, Libba Bray, updated today, so it's just a god day for me.

SO Philip Pullman sounds excited about everything. I don't think he would have made such a bold statement if he didn't REALLY like it. Any thoughts on this?

    PHILIP PULLMAN: POLITICAL OR HUMAN?

  18. Adiam21 says:

    @furbaby
    Nice for you.
To what extent I have appealed to his character?I love Lee Scoresby, but not Mr. Elliot. Now understood?

  19. Saint Christobel says:

That's not bad, I also imagined somebody younger like Viggo.

  20. Stephen says:

Sam is a good choice, and with a moustache he looks like what i thought Lee would be, excpet a bit older.

  21. andraea says:

i'm not 100% sure about how well sam will fit the role of Lee. He seems a little bit old–I always imagined Lee to be in his early to mid 40s for some reason. But in any case, I'm glad that Lee has FINALLY been cast. And i'm sure that he will grow on me with time. I trust the casting directors.

  23. the truth says:

It hink this is some very good casting, as apleasant a surprise as Daniel Craig for Lord Asriel.

Now if only they can recast Serafina Pekkala as Jennifer Garner…

  24. seanie says:

i thought imdb's description of sam elliot fits lee scoresby … "Tall, thin, wiry Sam Elliott is the classic picture of the American cowboy… " just switch the name sam elliot with lee scoresby eh? haha.

  25. Corsair of Umbar says:

Perfecto! Great choice for Lee Scoresby. I have seen him in a number of films, not too long ago in the movie "Thank you for Smoking." He has always been a great Big American Cowboy type persona. He even does the voiceover for Beef commercials: "Beef…it's what for Dinner," here in America.

It's funny how everyone has different opinions on which actor fits which part. Someone mentioned Bruce Campbell for Lee Scoresby. I can't see that at all, personally, but it's ok. Everyone has a different viewpoint on what the characters look like. That's the best thng about fiction: the reader gets to paint his/her own impression of how the characters look. Fortunately, for me, the casting has been spot-on to what I imagined.

  26. GABO says:

I DO NOT AGREE, IS TOO MATURE

  27. MCH says:

furbaby: I agree that Sam Elliott looks good for Lee Scoresby (maybe a little older than I imagined him, but that doesn't really matter), but please can you not shout down anyone who disagrees with you, like Adiam21?
    Thanks! 😉

  28. furbaby says:

MCI : All I said was that I thought he had misunderstood certain things. I did not shout him down. Please do not lecture me in public.

  29. Adiam21 says:

    Thank you MCH 🙂

I think after Bruce Campbell would be the best Lee, the cartoon figure Lucky Luke, or not? :laughing:Is he not the perfect cowboy?

  30. elly says:

i imagined him to be youger and really good looking i thought sawyer from lost should have played him that would be immense

  31. Vee says:

Wooh, thank goodness they cast an older Lee like in the book!

  32. Kat says:

Yes, looks like some people ought to go back n read the book again!

  33. Mockingbird says:

Now now, lets not get acerbic here. I also thought Lee was a younger man, but Sam Elliot seems to be a perfect choice to me. He is a versatile actor, he can seem as younger or older as the part requires. Also, he embodies the essence of Lee Scoresby and isn't that more important than the young v. old debate?

  34. elly says:

i thought lee scoresby and that witch haD something goin on its a bit weird if hes well old VOTE FOR SAWYER lol

  35. Skye says:

Well, you've got to remember that the witch was a whole lot older than he was… 😉

  36. Frjava says:

He look's great, though to hell with that idea, just got the entire cast of lost to do this film! lol, but seriously, i never imagened him being young…

  37. DJ says:

Ah, damn. He's okay, I'm sure he'll do a great job, but I totally had my hopes fixed on Nathan Fillion (Captain Malcom Reynolds from Firefly/Serenity). Lee is so similar to Mal, and Fillion's mannerisms would suit Lee perfectly.

  38. RaaRItsEmmY says:

Sam Elliot is the perfect Lee Scorseby! He gives me the feeling of that Texan aeronaut who's character changes all through the time he is alive.
