- Iorek arrives at Svalbard. Lyra tells him that she has tricked Iofur into fighting him, but she is afraid it isn't enough. He tells her that to fight Iofur is all he wanted, and he gives her the name "Silvertongue" for her ability at deceit.

She refuses, and comes back that night, sensing that her colleagues will accept, and she will be out of a job. She uses the computer to communicate with Dust as Lyra told her, and she is told that she must play the serpent. The angels, which are also Dust and dark matter, tell her about the window and that she must destroy the equipment. She does so, and goes through the window into Cittagazze.
-Will, Lyra, and the witches travel through Cittagazze for awhile. One night Ruta Skadi returns to them, with tales of what Lord Asriel is doing. She tells them also that she heard an old cliff-ghast say that Asriel needed one thing to win: Æsahættr.

The man, who is Stanislaus Grumman, who is John Parry, Will's father, heals Will's hand with a bloodmoss salve, and tells him that he must take the knife to Lord Asriel.
-John Parry pulls out his lantern before they part, to see who it is whom is talking to. In that moment, the two realize who the other is- and out of the darkness, an arrow kills John Parry. It is the witch who loved him, and vowed revenge when he turned her down. When Will tells her that the man was his father, she kills herself.
-Will takes his father's cloak, and his deerskin pack, and returns to the camp. Before he gets back, he is met by two angels, who have come to take him to Lord Asriel. He says he will go, but he must tell Lyra. He returns to the camp, but there is no one there- a few dead witches who were attacked by specters lie on the ground. All that is left is Lyra's rucksack, with the alethiometer still inside. The angels urge a very confused and frightened Will to come with them as book two ends.

One of them gestures that it will carry her, and she finds herself riding it across the open plain of the new world. -The end of Lyra's dream about Roger.
-Balthamos feels the death of Baruch, but is forced to endure the pain of it, for he must play the part of Will's daemon as they arrive at a village in the Himalayas.
-Will meets the priest of Kholodnoye, whose name is Otyets Semyon. The priest gives him directions to find a steamer to take him closer to the cave, and then makes him drink a glass of vodka before he goes.
-Will meets Iorek Byrnison, who is trying to get fuel for his ship, but the villagers won't let him have it. The bears are preparing to fight, but Will challenges Iorek to single combat. Iorek says it would be shameful to fight him, since he is so small. Will agrees, and asks for a piece of Iorek's armor for protection. Iorek gives him his helmet, and Will demonstrates what the knife can do by chopping the helmet to pieces. Iorek cannot fight that, so he gives in. Will arranges with the villagers that the bears can buy fuel peacefully, and everyone is kept safe.
-Will goes with Iorek on the ship, to find the cave where Lyra is still drugged asleep.
-The Consistorial Court and the Society of the Work of the Holy Spirit pooled their knowledge and determined where Lyra was. They sent a battalion of the Swiss Guard onboard zeppelins to take the cave, capture Lyra and Coulter, and fight off Lord Asriel's rescue force.

-Using the knife, Will cuts a window into the cave and takes Ama with him to wake Lyra up with the powder. The two forces have now arrived, and gunfire erupts in the valley as they struggle to get to the cave first.
-Will attempts to cut a window out of the cave again, but as he does so, he sees Mrs. Coulter and is reminded of his own mother. His mind leaves the knife, and the knife shatters into seven pieces.
-Tialys and Salmakia arrive and protect Will and Lyra as they make for the remaining window.
-Three Swiss soldiers appear, and Balthamos attacks them. The men's daemons fight back, and in fear, Balthamos flies away. Will shoots one of the men with Mrs. Coulter's gun, while the two gallivespians kill the other two men.
-They make it through the window safe, and Will tells Lyra all that happened while she was asleep, and she tells Will about her dream, and that they must go to the land of the dead.
-Will brings the broken knife to Iorek, who mends it, although he is reluctant to do so.
-Mrs. Coulter is held captive by Lord Asriel, who allows her to listen in on his meeting with his commanders. He shows her his newest invention, the Intention Craft.
-Coulter steals the Intention Craft and takes it to the Consistorial Court of Discipline, but Asriel's gallivepsian spy, Lord Roke, managed to get onboard before Coulter could escape.
-Mary Malone constructs the amber spyglass in the mulefa world in order to see Dust.
-Sattamax, the mulefa leader, charges Mary with the duty of finding why Dust is disappearing, and how it can be stopped.
-Will, Lyra, and the gallivespians enter a new world where people have just been killed by soldiers. Will feels about with the knife and finds a different feeling world than the others- he tries it out, and it is exactly like this one, only the dead people are ghosts. The children and the spies follow the newly dead ghosts to the suburbs of the dead, but are not allowed to pass since they are still alive.
-They find a family that is also still alive, and join them for the night. The family tells them about deaths, which are creatures like daemons who follow you around all of your life, and when it is time for you to die, they show you the way.
-Mary climbs one of the massive wheel-pod trees to study Dust. She sees that it is flowing away, out to the sea.
-Lyra's death leads her and the others to the lake bordering the land of the dead. Once there, he vanishes, and a boatsman rows up to take them across. However, he won't allow them to bring daemons along, and tells Lyra that Pan must stay behind. With great reluctance, she leaves him behind on the shore, and they all set off across the lake.
-Once across, the harpies try to prevent them from going through the door. Lyra offers to tell them a story, and they allow her to- she tells them one of her lies, and they attack because they know it is false. The children and the spies manage to get through anyway, although Lyra is bleeding from her forehead.
-They encounter all of the ghosts, who have no more substance than fog, and can do no more than whisper. They tell the ghosts that they are looking for Roger, and the ghosts pass along the message until he is found. The ghosts lead them to him
-They find Roger at last and speak to him.
- The harpies come then, and tell the ghosts that Will and Lyra mean to set them free- but the harpies say that they will now hurt and torment every ghost that is in the land of the dead because of this bold plan. Once this is said, they begin to fly away.
-Will calls them back and makes a bargain with them: all of the ghosts must tell the harpies a true story about their life, and in turn the harpies will lead the ghosts to the window out of the land of the dead.
-No-Name the harpy then lead them and all the ghosts to a higher part of the world, where they can cut a window out.
-Mrs. Coulter, in Geneva, gives herself up to the Consistorial Court in an attempt to trick them and find out what they mean to do to Lyra.
-Brother Louis, one of the priests of the Court, steals Coulter's locket, which has a lock of Lyra's hair in it. The Court has a new type of bomb that will destroy the source of genetic material, and a sample of hair works best. Lord Roke spies on them as they explain the process to Father MacPhail. Roke attacks Dr. Cooper, who is carrying the hair, and brings it back to Coulter.
-Coulter tells Roke that not all of the hair is there- MacPhail still has some, and one piece is enough to use the bomb.
-MacPhail takes Coulter to the power plant at Saint-Jean-Les-Eaux, in order to obtain enough power to set off the bomb. -With Roke's help, Coulter manages to escape.
-The bomb requires the process of severing a person from their daemon- Macphail meant to use Coulter for this, but since she escaped, he sacrifices himself. The bomb goes off.
-Asriel comes with the Intention Craft and saves Coulter- Lord Roke was killed in the fighting.
-Lyra and the others are still making their way through the land of the dead when Lee Scoresby's ghost appears and tells Will that he must cut off Lyra's hair at the point where a lock has been cut away. Without questioning this, Will does so and quickly cuts a window into another world, carves a niche in the rock, and puts the hair there, then closes the window again.
-Just in time, for the bomb goes off a moment later. It does not harm Lyra, but it opens a vast, bottomless abyss in the world of the dead, where all the Dust flows into.
-Lyra runs along the edge of the abyss in a moment of Lyraness and spontaneous carelessness. She slips and falls, but No-Name the harpy catches her.
-At last they are high enough for Will to cut a window, and he does so- into the world of the Mulefa. The first ghost out is Roger, and with a burst of happiness, he disappears and becomes part of the universe.
-Mary builds a platform in the wheel-pod tree and sees that the flow of Dust is getting faster and stronger- it's now a flood.
-Gomez sees the Tualapi birds and makes them fear him so they will do whatever he wants.
-Asriel and his forces prepare for the great battle with the Authority, and they also begin the search for Lyra and Will's daemons (for Will had a daemon like Lyra, only his was but a silent voice in his mind).
-Asriel and Coulter talk about Lyra, about what she's done, and what part she still has to play in the great scheme of things.
-Will and Lyra go with the ghosts of Lee and Grumman and other soldiers into the world where the battle will take place. Before leaving, Lyra bids farewell to No-Name, and gives her the name Gracious Wings to thank her for her help.
-Lyra and Will go with the gallivespians in search of their daemons in that world, during the battle.
-Coulter flies the Intention Craft to the Clouded Mountain, and convinces Metatron that she can deliver Asriel to him.
-Xaphania shows Lord Asriel a window that she found leading to the land of the dead, near where the abyss was. He goes to see it, and the flow of Dust.
-Lyra, Will and the gallivespians stumble upon a group of cliff-ghasts, who are surrounding a crystal litter.
-Coulter leads Metatron down into the land of the dead by the Abyss where Asriel is. She goes on ahead, telling the Regent to wait in the shadows. She tells Asriel what she has done, and they quickly plot to force him into the Abyss.
-Metatron comes down to them, and the two lovers set upon him- it is a long fight, and it is nearly lost, but Coulter and Asriel manage to pull the struggling angel down into the Abyss, and together they all fall into the void.
-Will and Lyra fight off the cliff-ghasts, but Tialys dies in the fight. They find that in the crystal litter is the Authority, so frail that when they help him out, the breeze causes him to drift apart like the ghosts did.
-Madame Oxential comes with hundreds of gallivespians to protect Will and Lyra and lead them safely to their daemons. Salmakia dies once she is certain that they are safe.
-They see Iorek, and Will frees him from a net with the knife. More bears arrive and join the battle.
-Lee's ghost leads them to their daemons, as they fight off specters with the knife.
-In the confusion, both pick up the other's daemon, and feel a shock of excitement at the feeling. They escape into a window after bidding goodbye to Lee and John Parry.
-In the morning, Will and Lyra find themselves in the world of the mulefa- who take them to Dr. Malone.
-Mary rides away with the mulefa to see the procession of ghosts as they leave the world of the dead. One of them tells her "Tell Them Stories." -Mary listens to the story that Will and Lyra tell her.
-That night she tells them the marzipan story.
-Later on, Mary goes for a walk and sees her tree fall. When she returns, she sees Gomez on the tualapi… he searches around, then leaves again.
-Will and Lyra go out the next morning to search for their daemons, despite Mary warning them that she saw a man with a gun the night before.
-Gomez follows them, but his daemon is trapped by Balthamos, who leads him away to protect Will and Lyra.
-Lyra and Will eat lunch in a grove of trees, and it is then that Lyra gives Will a little red fruit, as Mary told them about when she fell in love. They both then realize that they love each other, and say so, and kiss.
-Gomez almost catches the angel, but he falls through him and into a little stream. Balthamos forces his head under the water and drowns him. Balthamos then vanishes, for he lost the will to live when Baruch died.
-Serafina Pekkala finds the daemons and tells them many things. She names Will's daemon Kirjava. She leaves them then and goes to Mary and tells her things as well, then returns to the Gyptians on a boat.
-Will and Lyra go out again the next day, and this time they meet Pan and Kirjava on the dunes by the sea, and there they are told that they must part, and live each in their separate worlds, and no windows must remain open. Lyra tries the alethiometer for an answer, but it no longer works for her. Xaphania comes to them then, and asks Will if he will show her how to close a window, for it is the angels who will close them all. He agrees, and does so.
-Lyra and Will then hold each others daemons, and from then on, neither will change form again, after feeling a lover's touch.
-The gyptians arrive to take them home, and all bid farewell to the mulefa, who give Mary a few seeds for the wheel-pod trees as a parting gift.
-The sail to Cittagazze through the vast windows still open from Asriel's blasting of the aurora, and go through the window back into Will's Oxford. Serafina teaches Mary how to see her daemon on the way. Once in Will's Oxford, Lyra leads them to the Botanic Garden, and a certain bench that exists also in her world. She and Will vow to go to that bench in their separate worlds on midsummer's day at noon, for as long as they live.
-At last, they return to the window, and Lyra goes through while Will remains behind and closes it, parting them forever.
-Will then breaks the knife so that he won't be tempted to use it, by thinking of Lyra and cutting at the same time.
-He goes with Mary, who offers to help him get everything in order.
-Back in Lyra's world, she tells her story to the Master of Jordan and Dame Hannah, who give her suggestions about what she can do now that she is home. They also give her her own key to the garden, so she can go whenever she wants to.
-Late one night she and Pan are sitting on the bench, talking and listening to the bells of Oxford and a nightingale in the garden. Lyra knows now that she must build the Republic of Heaven in the here and the now, and with this knowledge, The Amber Spyglass and His Dark Materials ends at last.
