I tihkn critics fail to understand Tolkien is about the world his stories takes place in rather than the individual characters and events. It's a beautiful, epic history full of wonderfull language and creatures and places. It's alls o vast and detailed and coherent.

It is not a study of the human condition at all, it's not that kind of novel.

I don't like Tolkien's work for my own reasons, but I don't have anything against people who like him. I just hate how they always say LotR is the best book (books) EVER IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND EVER EVER EVER.

No book can hold that title.
