I loved Sally Lockhart. Although I didn't really understand the first bit about the Indian Mutiny and such... but then I didn't really enjoy Ruby in the Smoke.
My favourite out of them was probably The Shadow in the North ;_; or The Tin Princess. (But I didn't like Adelaide in TTP).
Overall I still think HDM is way better than everything else of PP, but SL is a close second. ^_^

Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men,
It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again!
Do you hear the people sing?
Say, do you hear the distant drums?
It is the future that they bring
When tomorrow comes!

Adelaide's explanation of why she didn't go to find Sally and everything was kind of lame, at least to me.

From the Freedom of Light into the Freedom of Darkness she fades - but her shadow here remains - for so ardent was the radiance of her being. - By the grace of dear Maximillian.

I've read the Ruby in the Smoke and I just finished Shadow in the North a couple of minutes ago.
WHY THE HELL DID FRED HAVE TO DIE!!?!??
I was very depressed and rather pissed off about that for a long time last night.
I'll definitely be reading the next two books though.

Sally Lockhart used to be my hero...

Do you think she's a better character than Lyra?

mmmm...no, Lyra has more personality...but the Sally Lockhart books take place in Victorian times, and she was really independent and feministic...I wanted to be just like her.

Woot!
PP wrote:BBC television is very interested in making a series based on Sally Lockhart. I've always felt that TV, rather than film, was the natural home for the Sally stories, and I'll be delighted if this comes about. I'll put up more information here as soon as I get it. By the way, there will certainly be more Sally stories. I have a couple in my head just waiting for me to have the time to write them.
When in doubt, castle.

I've read "The Ruby in the Smoke" and "The Shadow in the North" in French, and I enjoyed it very much. I think the characters have got a really personality, and I love the Victorian time...
I'm reading "The Tiger in the Well" in english, now, and I enjoy it very much too, I think it is even more interesting in English than the translation in French.
There is an historic background, and I can learn a lot of things about History, and, in my case, the Jews.
I prefer Sally to HDM, which book I don't know why, I can't read after the 20 first pages.
And when I'll finish The Tiger, I'll read the Tin Princess...in english too.

It's a shame thats the way you feel. I don't personally think that the two series of books are comparable, despite being by the same author, and both being really great! I read Sally Lockhart after HDM, but that has no bearing for me. I have read all of them and reread them several times

i'm enjoying the shadow in the north quite a bit now (i've only ever had a chance to read the first and third before). it's interesting to hear about the socialist movements going on in the background.

I dunno about you, but at my school I have had it drilled into to me about a zillion times what a rhetorical question is

Sorry, you do have a point there. I meant it as a rhetorical question though. Sorry.

I loved Sally Lockhart, too. I think I remember reading them after I finished TGC and TSK for the first time, but I read the Tin Princess before any of them. Although it doesn't fit in the series, it got me into Pullman. I always found Jim to be hot. Anyways, that was years and years ago and I'd really like to reread them. I'm sure there was a lot I didn't understand back then. ::ahem::
And I cried like a freakin' baby at the end of the second one. ::sniff::

Verbal ability is a highly overrated thing in a guy, and it's our pathetic need for it that gets us into so much trouble.
